Help Wally Get His Hip Operation

Donation protected
Hi,  we are Eric and Hazel and we're hoping to raise funds to help Wally.

Who is Wally?

Well, on Wednesday 2nd May, Hazel saw a small, Cocko-poo type dog run in off the road up the driveway towards our house. He seemed badly injured and dirty. We tried to approach him but, as soon as he saw us, he ran for his life carrying his injured back leg. He was injured and terrified.

That evening we left out food for him and we saw him again but as soon as he saw us from any distance, he ran.

The following day was spent trying to find him and we realised that he was roaming widely. We checked all of our neighbours...he/she did not belong to anyone. Once again we tried to calm him and approach him, but once again he was so scared, he ran for his life.

We needed some back-up to get this poor dog the help he needed (we saw that he was a male) and John Duffy, a very kind, dog-mad volunteer loaned us a cage trap. But our poor injured dog was too street-wise to be fooled...he approached it but wouldn't go in.

That evening, we discovered him asleep under a bush but just as we got to him, he was up and running (it was amazing how fast he could run on three legs). We were distraught thinking about this little fella sleeping outside on a cold night and vowed that we would continue our efforts to catch him or befriend him.

The following morning, neighbours reported he was on the road towards our house and we contacted everyone asking them not to put out food...if he was hungry, the only food available was in the cage trap. We waited for hours until he finally appeared on our driveway. He cautiously entered the trap and, much to our relief, the trapdoor fell and we had him.

When we approached the cage we expected that this little fella would be cowering and shivering with fear but, as we spoke to him, his dirty fluffy tail started wagging and he allowed us to pet him on the head through the bars of the cage. He responded by licking our hands.

When we got him back home and opened the cage, he jumped out and straight into Hazel's arms, licking her and wagging his tail (much to the disgust of our spaniel Suzie who was not impressed).

The poor dog was filthy. His fluffy coat was muddy and matted. He had dog excrement caked onto his rear end. He had a ragged and dirty blue collar on his naeck (no name tag or contact details) He leg seemed badly injured. Despite all of this, this little dog seemed to sense that he didn't have to run any more.  After a meal and a shower (which he was quite happy to have), we brought him to our vet to check on his injuries but, more importantly to check to see if he was chipped.

We were delighted to discover that he was indeed chipped and had an owner and a contact telephone number. I rang the number in the expectation of speaking with a very excited and happy owner but my call was answered by a woman who, when asked if she was missing a dog, simply replied 'No!'.

When I explained that we had found an injured dog in a very distressed state and that he was chipped with her contact details, she remembered that she 'once had a dog like that but that she had given him to some shelter'. She didn't know, or want to know, any more. He was an abandoned dog...and even worse, he was most likely a 'dumped dog'.

We instantly decided that this poor little dog would become a part of our family and we decided to name him Wally...as in 'Where's Wally?' which seemed to be the motto of the house for days as we searched for him.

On examination by the vet, it turns out that Wally has a very badly dislocated hip...an old injury consistent with being dumped from a moving car. It will require major and costly surgery but we are determined to bring this little dog back to full health. he has had a very rough start to his two years and we told him that life would be different for him from this week on.

So many people, on hearing the story of Wally, offered to help us pay for the costs of bringing this lost, abandoned, two-year old, happy, affectionate dog back to full health. So that's why we have set up a Help Wally Get His Hip Operation page.

All funds will be used for Wally's vet fees and, if there is any money left over, we will divide it equally between the wonderful animal welfare groups and volunteers who helped us give Wally a new, forever home with us.  He is simply adorable and has fitted into his new life so easily. It's as if he can't believe his luck.

The operation is planned for next week, followed by many weeks of TLC for Wally...

Thanks to everyone who have followed Wally's story so far...the best has yet to come!
