HELP VANUATU'S EVACUEES

Donation protected
Please help us provide food and water to the Ambae evacuees arriving in Luganville.

THE EMERGENCY

Vanuatu's government has declared a state of emergency due to volcanic activity on the island of Ambae. This is resulting in the total evacuation of all residents.

The mass evacuation will displace some 7000 people, who are fleeing their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs.

SITUATION ON THE GROUND

Neighbouring islands such as Espiritu Santo are offering safe haven. However, these islands lack the resources, infrastructure and capacity to assist evacuees when they land.

Over the past few days, the town of Luganville has been receiving a significant proportion of the evacuees as government and privately owned vessels have ferried people to safety. Once they are set ashore in Luganville however, there are few places for them to go.

Church buildings, private homes, public spaces and schools have been designated evacuation centres but providing people with shelter and sanitation is proving difficult.

The government of Vanuatu is being assisted by the governments of New Zealand and Australia in coordinating relief efforts. However, supplies of food, water, shelter and medicines remain in short supply.

Large NGOs such as the Red Cross are well positioned to assist with the coordination of efforts, but - as was found in the aftermath of Cyclone Pam - the most effective and immediate assistance comes from locals on the ground.

 THE LOCAL EFFORT

Vanuatu is no stranger to disaster. Local Ni-Vanuatu people and expat communities have been quick to activate informal networks to deal with emergencies such as this one. They do so in a timely and highly effective manner during that crucial period before supplies arrive from abroad.

Mayumi Green (owner of Wrecks to Rainforest ) is one such person helping to coordinate the efforts in Luganville. Other business owners are donating funds and supplies, but cash is required to purchase food to feed the evacuees and supply them with essential items.

Mayumi has requested this Go Fund Me page be established to enable donations to be made through a secure, centralised system. These will them be drawn down upon as needed, with receipts or photographic evidence of purchases made posted to this page as evidence of the help your donations are enabling.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We need your help NOW, please!

Donating clothes, medicine, etc to ship across is a secondary requirement, so please do not ask to donate such items at this time.

What's needed NOW is money so that we may provide evacuees with sufficient food and water. Hungry tummies can't wait for containers to arrive and there is only so much that local businesses can self-fund.

Please give generously and know that - apart from the fee deducted by Go Fund Me - 100% of any money raised will be used for the purposes detailed above.

Unlike the large charities, NO ADMINISTRATION COSTS will be deducted, as all assistance is provided on an unpaid, voluntary basis.

Thank you for helping those who find themselves without home, shelter, food, or comfort.
