Brooklyn Michelle Jefferson is a funny, loving and vibrant second grader that lives in Augusta County, VA., with her mom, dad and little brother. Brooklyn was born with Profound (completely deaf) hearing loss in both ears. It was the result of a traumatic birthing experience and caused by the length of time she had to be on a ventilator, breathing and feeding tubes. She was a hearing aid user from 6 months-13 months with no success. At 13 months she underwent a 6 hour surgery for cochlear implants. At 14 months, her incision site was healed and her implants were activated. She started speech therapy immediately (being that she was nearly 2 years behind in hearing now). Speech therapy was a drive across the mountain to UVA Fontaine Medical Center once a week from 14 months of age until 5 years of age ( the start of kindergarten). Because of the success from therapy and cochlear implants, Brooklyn started mainstream public schooling with hearing peers and on the same level as those peers. Cochlear implants have given her so much opportunity.  She's doing things that doctors said she would never get to experience. She cheers, plays, goes to the school she wants, verbally communicates, has had perfect attendance since starting kindergarten and gets the best of both worlds (hearing and deaf). Without her processors, she hears nothing, it's scary for her if Mom is not with her. However, she does not sleep or swim with them on. She wants to hear. She chooses to hear.
So the problem this family is having is cochlear released a new model of her implants (just like phone companies) and they are discontinuing hers. They will no longer repair her models after March 1, 2019. So if hers break or stop working (which they have done twice this week), then she has zero hearing, because they can't service hers any longer due to discontinuation. She's in a N5 and the upgrade model is a N7. Brooklyn still has the originals for almost 7 years ago when they started this journey and they are drastically getting weaker. The upgrade cost is $9,997.00 per ear, because most people are deaf in one ear. Brooklyn needs two as she's deaf in both ears. $9,997.00 includes one ear and one battery. Brooklyn needs two batteries per ear to get her through a full school day. This cost is at $22,000.00, which doesn't include the warranty of $1500.00 nor the charging station for her batteries. This family has both parents working and have Blue Cross health insurance through their employer, however, the only in-network insurance company for cochlear is Medicaid and being that this family has both parents working to be able to provide a good future for their two children they make too much money to qualify for Medicaid.
Due to income they not only do not qualify for Medicaid, and any other financial assistance that is available they make too much to qualify for that as well.
This vibrant first grader that has the world at her fingers is running out of time. She needs her "ears" and to lose this will not only crush her hearing but her spirit as well! Brooklyn's cochlears have given her so much opportunity please don't let a MULTI-BILLION dollar insurance company take this from her!

I got to see first hand what this little girl and her family deal with on a daily basis a couple weeks ago at my oldest daughters wedding. As you know Brooklyn is a very vibrant and friendly little girl. While dancing the night away at the reception, Brooklyn’s “ears” stopped working. Not only did this cause her to go into a screaming frenzy but I could see the stress and worry on both mom and dads faces as they hurriedly left the reception to get her home. Hearing is something we all take for granted, imagine waking up one day and not being able to hear your children, mother or father? Imagine dancing with your cousins having the time of your life to all of a sudden hearing nothing?? The cochlear implants let Brooklyn have as normal of a life as possible! This little girl has NEVER missed a day of school, she is active in cheerleading and loves to be outdoors. While we take for granted that we will just wake up and be able to hear, she takes nothing for granted. Her mom and dad give her the ability to be a normal child. Not having these devices will not allow Brooklyn to stay in public school, she will not only lose her “ears” but her confidence to achieve anything will be taken from her, all because her mom and dad both work to provide a better future for Brooklyn and her bother. Please don't let this insurance company take that from her. No donation is too small and if you aren't able to donate please say a prayer that Brooklyn will get her new "ears" and please SHARE this page as much as possible.

I added a video to this update to show you what people with cochlear implants actually hear. Its very interesting.
