Help Tom Get a New Car

Last week, the week before Christmas, my dad's car was T-boned. It was already in bad shape, with duct tape covering the windows and malfunctioning breaks, but it's now completely unusable. He has to walk to work now, and he has hip and foot problems so with that on top of a Wisconsin winter, he really needs some help.
My father has never been a well-off man. He always took care of my brother and me, but never had much for himself. He works at a hardware store now and is almost 60. He's a hard worker, and very generous and good natured. He'll talk to every stranger like they're best friends. Getting money for a car, even a used one, will be very difficult and may take a long time. But he still wants to send me Christmas gifts, he's just that kind of dad.
He needs a car, it doesn't have to be new, it doesn't have to be fancy, it just needs to work and continue to work for a couple of years. $1000 will take a huge chunk out of the cost of that, as used cars in Wisconsin are not that expensive. I'd like him to be able to get a new one before the end of winter.
