Starting at Auburn College of Veterinary Medicine has opened so many doors of opportunity. I have met some amazing people, made lifelong friends and have been presented with the resources to work towards my achieving my dreams. Last semester I applied for a spot at a Biannual International Veterinary Conference called SYMCO which organizes the International Symposium on Wildlife Utilization in Southern Africa (ISWU). This symposium serves as a platform for a variety of leading speakers both local and International to address veterinary students on a host of wildlife management topics and the role of the Veterinarian in wildlife utilization and conservation.
A total of 10 local and 60 international veterinary students from around the world are chosen based off their resumes and applications. I have been lucky enough to be picked for one of these spots out of roughly 3000 international applicants
Attending this conference could be a pivotal moment in the future of my career not only as a student, but as a future Veterinarian.
I have always been obsessed with animals and conservation. Growing up my parents tolerated endless Zoo trips, Steve Irwin tv specials, “Zoo Books” subscriptions, and plastic animal toys EVERYWHERE. I have worked really hard to achieve what I have so far, and I am blessed have an amazing network of support, but opportunities like this don’t come without a price.
To attend the conference the cost is $3,300 not including the plane ticket.
Opportunities like this don’t come often and without hard work. I’ve never been known to run away from an adventure, but I have run away with the Circus. Any contribution you can make helps a tremendous amount. Even 1$ adds up. Any money raised that does not go to symposium costs will be donated to The Centre for Veterinary Wildlife Studies at the University of Pretoria.
