Help The Jago Raise Essential Funds To Open!

Please unite with us and help The Jago across the finish line!

We’ve started a crowdfunding appeal because we need to ask for your help. We desperately need  your support and generosity to get one of London’s most loved venues open once again.

There’s a long history which relates to 440 Kingsland Road, but we’ll try to keep this brief. The premises was previously home to Passing Clouds and for 10 years it was a hugely successful live music venue and community hub. Sadly, it was forced to close its doors 2 years ago and has since sat unoccupied, deteriorating by the day. However, hope for the building, and the local community came last year when Hackney Council considered a new proposal from us.

Good news is, thanks to all the amazing, hard work the local community put in during the run up to the closure, we’ve been granted permission to reopen the premises once again as a community space and live music venue. This alone is a superb achievement and one which would not have happened without the communities relentless fight!!

Over the past couple of months, a handful of us have been working tirelessly, day and night, to get the venue ready for opening. Already we’ve made some fantastic improvements to the building. We’ve added a large cloakroom, built extra toilets for everyone, built a new bar downstairs, repaired the leaking roof, improved the sound proofing throughout and also made the necessary structural changes to adhere to new fire safety regulations. All the electrics have been replaced throughout too. We’re calling it The Jago and it will be a rejuvenated community space for live entertainment, shows, concerts, music and so much more!!

Unfortunately, the bad news is, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we have continuously stumbled across one problem after another, and another, during the renovations. It’s frequently been that ‘two steps forward, three steps back’ situation! We are now about ⅔ of the way through the refurbishment but need to ask for your help to get us across the finish line because we’ve run out of money!

When a building is left empty for such a long time, there will inevitably be repairs to sort and problems to fix in order to ensure the building is fit for use again. We budgeted well for this, and very generously too. We’ve already put in over £100K into the project. However, what we didn’t expect is a whole heap of hidden problems and complications, which weren’t visible when we first took over the building. We also thought we’d be able to recycle/reuse the existing CCTV, alarm system, main entrance doors, fire alarm system and some bar equipment too. But it has since transpired that this will not be possible. Due to damage beyond repair, we are having to source replacements and at a huge expense to us.

Also, legally, in order to open our doors to the public, we must have certain things in place. Due to the building work going way over budget, we’re now not able to pay for these essential items, such as new CCTV, fire detection system and an intruder alarm. Going over budget has also meant we’ve eaten into the cash we had put aside for our all important sound system!!

A huge amount of love, time and money has been put into the building by all of us, with the expectation that it's able to witness many more years of awesome music, good vibes and an amazing community spirit. However, there is so much more to do and we literally don’t have another penny to pay for it all. We’ve exhausted all other avenues for money and sold everything we can to raise more funds. Go Fund Me and our appeal to YOU is our last piece of hope!

What is the Jago?

The Jago is an arts and culture hotspot; one for all and all for one. At the beating heart of Hackney, we host a range of live music events, dance, performance, film screenings, workshops, play dates, yoga classes and much more. Our eclectic mix is tantamount to London’s diverse communities and thus, offering a little bit of something for everyone. The Jago is East London in a nutshell, and our vision is to celebrate and shine a light on the spirit of diversity for generations to come.

What are our plans?

When we open, free space for the community will be provided to help enable up and coming individuals and artists achieve their goals. Charity work and fund raising will also be high up on our agenda, to help support a variety of organisations local to the area. Much like before, music and sharing our love for all things creative, is going to be at the core of everything we do!

We are super excited about bringing back a space in the community, which will benefit so many people. It will be home to Meráki Community, who will assist with the community lead activities taking place at The Jago, as well as in and around Hackney.

Why support us?

The Jago is a unique place and a once much-loved venue in London, providing all kinds of wonderful music and events to local people. We want to continue doing this to support musicians and artists to hone their craft and provide a space for the local community to enjoy a totally independent venue in an increasingly homogenised city.

As a community, so many of you have supported this venue in the past and helped make a huge difference. It is with an open heart that we ask for your help once again, and at such a crucial stage too. Your donation will be put towards getting us across the finish line and ensuring we open, hopefully later this month. No matter how small the donation, every penny will help us tremendously.

In return for your kind generosity, we would like to offer everyone who donates a little something;

- Up to £25 ... we’ll give you free entry into our events for 1 month
- £26 - £50 ... we’ll give you and a friend free entry into our events for 1 month
- £51 -  £100 … we’ll give you free entry into our events for 2 months
- Over £100 … we’ll give you and a friend free entry into our events for 2 months, plus an extra special thank you surprise!

We cannot thank you enough for taking the time to read our Go Fund Me appeal. Please feel free to share our story with anyone who may be able to help us. Also, if you have any questions about our appeal or would like to talk with us, we would welcome your contact.

Blessings and gratitude for us all,

The Jago & Meráki Community
