Update from Emma;

On behalf of our family, I would like to thank you for your incredible generosity and support during this very difficult time. It’s meant so much to all of us, including Patrick and our daughters to see all of your names, and messages of love.

Yesterday, March 26th my love, and best friend of 25 years took his last breath surrounded by family.  We miss him terribly.

Patrick was a brilliant painter, chef  - a devoted father, son, brother and partner.  He was incredibly proud of his family, never missing an opportunity to cheer on our daughters in sporting events, on stage, and in life.

It’s perhaps a small gift to say that despite only having 47 years on this planet, he made, together with all of us the very best of each and every one. As a result of our daughter’s survival from cancer 12 years ago, our priorities in life became crystal clear.  We chased our dreams, we ran away into nature - surfed waves, hiked mountains, used the good china, stayed up too late, held hands, and every day said ‘I love you’.  We celebrated a lot of things, often and with many good friends who have carried us through this terrible year.

I wrote, and read this poem to Patrick every day, and share with you to again say thank you for allowing us time to be together - with burden of finances lifted for a while.

We’ve never left each other.
You have been my safety; my sun.
My courage, a steady, trusted and faithful friend in a vicious world.
A hand I held in hurricanes of tragedy
And danced with through celebration
Joy and laughter. So much laughter.
Our entwined arms brought us three times
Most cherished daughters.
Girls with your sparkling eyes
Girls with your kindness and determination
Their twirling and chaotic pathways to the future will reveal new reflections of you.
And that's where I'll look for you now

Thank you again for caring for our little family.  We will pay it forward.

If you live in Sooke or have heard of the the Tour De Rock, then you have heard of Patrick Irwin and his family. Patrick is a long-time resident and past owner of the Stone Pipe Grill. Sadly, he is dying of colon cancer and is leaving behind a beautiful wife and three wonderful young girls who will have to grow up with only memories of their amazing dad. The doctors have now exhausted all treatment options.
This is the second time this family has had to endure the devastating effects of cancer. Patrick and Emma’s daughter Daisy survived the leukemia she was diagnosed with soon after her birth in 2005. Since then, Patrick and his family have been pillars of support to so many other families in the cancer community and a source of strength in both good and difficult times.
As the end draws near, this family needs to focus on each other. If this campaign can help to alleviate some of the financial burdens, it will also allow them to focus on making lasting memories with each other. They won't have to worry about losing the only home the kids have ever known, think about how to pay the hydro bill and funeral expenses. This family would be the last ones to ask for this type of support but it is needed and will help them.
