Help the Dean Family Get to Amanda's Homegoing

Donation protected
We learned that the loving and vivacious Amanda Boozer-Brown was shot and killed on Monday morning, March 25th 2019.  Amanda, who was only 33, was returning home from a visit at her mother’s home with her husband, preteen daughter and 1-year-old son in the van. They were parked on her street in Chicago when someone inside a car fired a gun into the van. Bullets hit Amanda in the back and abdomen; wounded her 1-year-old son in the knee; and hit her husband in multiple parts of the body. She leaves 3 children behind. Her husband is in stable condition.

Amanda is the cousin of Anthony Curtis, Executive Director of the Youth Violence Prevention Network , and Tamika Dean, Assistant Director of YVPN. Their family, including Amanda’s first cousin Sheila Dean and cousin Daniel Dean, who has been leading families in the fight to end gun violence in the south end of Seattle. They have worked tirelessly with the YVPN for over 11 years.

Tragically, Amanda’s mother, Meriam, mourned the loss of her youngest son, Melvin, who was shot and killed. Both Meriam’s youngest son and youngest daughter's lives have been cut short by gun violence.

Meriam had just visited with family in Seattle and the family has been happily planning a family reunion in Chicago for June. Now, the family must come together to mourn Amanda’s death. It is their hearts’ desire for all of the 33 family members in Seattle to travel to Chicago to lay their loved one to rest and be a support for each other.

It is a financial hardship to get everyone to Chicago on short notice. Money donated will go specifically for travel expenses for the Seattle family members to Chicago. Any help we can provide will give the family just a little bit of space and grace for their grief.

Family members say Amanda was a powerful woman, full of love and kindness. She was always encouraging an end to gun violence, having to see her brother’s body on the streets after being shot dead.

Amanda’s Facebook Post on March 19, 2019:

Being a child born in the ghetto, a place where "we" dont beat the odds...we're uneducated, we have bastard children, we die without ever truly living, we have no "class", we steal and kill our own, we are a divided race, we will never amount to much...

Am I wrong for running this marathon to #ChangeTheViciousCycle?
Am I wrong for thinkin' out the box from where I stay?(crabs in a barrel)
Am I wrong for sayin' that I choose another way?
(Living vs surviving)
I ain't tryin' to do what everybody else doin'
Just 'cause everybody doin' what they all do
If one thing I know - I'll fall, but I'll grow
I'm walking down this road of mine, this road that I call home
Am I trippin' for having a vision?
My prediction - I'ma be on top of the world
Walk your walk, and don't look back
Always do what you decide
Don't let them control your life
That's just how I feel
Fight for yours, and don't let go
Don't let them compare you, no
Don't worry, you're not alone
That's just how we feel
