Help the Children of Umiarong Repair Their School

Donation protected
We’re asking for help to raise funds for Umiarong RC Lower & Upper Primary School.

Umiarong village is in the heart of Meghalaya, North East India and their small village school is in a state of disrepair. Despite their best efforts, the local people of this rural area can’t afford to fund the repairs needed to make the school  a safe and workable learning environment.

As you can see from the photos, the windows are broken and missing, there are holes in the ceiling and water pours through onto the classroom floor, which is especially bad in monsoon (having been here for a month in the rainy season, we can vouch for the fact that it rains a LOT!).

The school has one hundred pupils aged from nursery (three years old) all the way up to fourteen years of age, split across two small buildings.

Here the children learn a wide variety of subjects from their teachers, including English, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Environmental Studies and Health Education.

In the larger building of the two, three teachers teach three separate classes in the same room. They desperately need partition walls so that the learning environment is not so chaotic. It would be incredible if we could raise enough money to create walls so that each class could have its own classroom.

There is also a big need for better toilet facilities. At the moment, the school has only one sub standard toilet that is shared between the 100 children and the teachers. It is our hope to be able to raise the money to build a toilet block, which would have a separate toilets for girls, boys and staff.

In an ideal world we would love to help build a brand new school for the children.

Through the collective efforts of the villagers, the land has been purchased, but at this moment in time there is simply not enough money to do anything with it. Hopefully we can raise at least enough money to help repair the current building. Any extra money raised would go straight towards making the children’s dream of a brand new school a reality.

The money that we raise will go such a long way here. Even a small amount can make a big difference in the lives and futures of the children of Umiarong and the surrounding villages.

It will also create jobs for local workers. The average laborer's daily wage is roughly what you would spend on a pint or a glass of wine in the pub. If that’s all you can afford to donate, please consider having one less pint this weekend. To us it’s nothing, but it will make a massive impact here.

Please dig deep for these sweet kids and their wonderful teachers, they are so grateful for your generosity.

Thank you all so much.
