Help the Bioluminescent Penguins go to DI Globals

Donation protected
Meet the Bioluminescent Penguins- 5th grade students at Sakai Intermediate on Bainbridge Island in Washington State who have earned a spot to compete at the 2019 Destination Imagination (DI) global championships!

The Penguins chose the Service Learning challenge and rallied support from community leaders including Sustainable Bainbridge to help them understand the impact of food waste in landfills on the environment and how other schools have reduced food waste. They wrote and presented their proposal to the assistant principal and janitorial staff for the roll-out of compost bins at their school, Sakai Intermediate.  And with perseverance and efforts to educate the student body, they got it done!

But that is just half the challenge!
They put in months of work to write and perform an 8-minute performance based on parameters set forth by the DI challenge masters to tell their story. The kids wrote, costumed, built the set and performed the challenge from the perspective of their characters- the Tomato Queen, Green Bean, "Bob-colli", Raspberry, Strawberry and "Methane monster" (who performed the "methane rap!") In their story, the characters are trapped in the trash bin trying to escape to the compost bin.

The Penguin's unique solution to the challenge earned them the prestigious DaVinci Award offered for exceptional creativity for taking a unique approach to the challenge and for risk-taking.  This is Destination Imagination’s most prestigious award and is not given lightly.

This team is excited to be one of the top-scoring Destination Imagination teams in our state and to have the opportunity to present their challenge solution at Global Finals—an international academic competition where they will compete against teams in our challenge from around the globe on May 22nd in Kansas City, Missouri.

But they need YOUR HELP to get there.

The team has been busy fund raising to pay for their 6 day trip to globals... the travel and hotel expenses add up! Airfare for our 5 team members and 2 team leaders: $5075, hotel: $1500, prop truck and other fees: $425,  food $2500 and ground transportation/ luggage fees: $500.= $10000! This doesn't even include the $5500 registration fee we've raised and already submitted for the competition. Not surprisingly this  is more than the team families can afford.

Can you help this team of future leaders? Please use this gofundme to make your donation to support them.
