Help support the ACT Greyhound Support Network
Help us raise much needed funds for the ACT Greyhound Support Network (“AGSN”) to continue its wonderful work of rescuing unwanted greyhounds and finding their forever homes. It is our goal to raise $10,000.00.
The AGSN is the primary support base for ex-racing greyhounds within the Canberra region. Since starting in 2013, the AGSN has helped in the rehoming of over 350 greyhounds.
Whilst the AGSN is not a charity or a rehoming organisation itself, it provides much needed funds and practical support to four organisations, being, “Friends of the Hound”, “Greyhound Rescue”, “Homeward Bound Hounds” and “Rescued Greyhounds NSW Central Coast”. Its volunteers travel thousands of kilometres each year to rescue greyhounds, arrange necessary veterinary care including de-sexing, finding foster carers who will look after the greyhounds while they adjust to their new circumstances, provide dog beds, dog leads and food. All of which is done and paid for by volunteers, along with some generous assistance from the community. Their support does not stop there. For those who welcome a greyhound into their home, the volunteers provide assistance, support and friendship as the new owners settle with their furry friend for life. So why is Geoff Mazengarb wanting to raise money for the AGSN? It’s a long story.
Geoff loves dogs. Over the years, he’s had an Alaskan Malamute, Norwegian Elkhounds and Whippets. He has always admired the greyhound but never had the chance to call one his own.
In 2016, Geoff’s home life changed and he and his youngest son, James, found themselves living together in a quiet house. They toyed with the idea of welcoming a dog into their lives but never took the plunge. Work and a house extension took up most of Geoff’s time.
In October 2017, the ACT Law Society held an event during mental health week, being “Meet a Greyhound”. The brilliant volunteers from the AGSN along with the superstar greyhounds themselves were introduced to members of the legal profession for cuddles and pats. Geoff was one of the members.
Amongst other lovely greyhounds, Geoff met a gorgeous petite greyhound named, “Blue”. This was fate. This was it. Love at first sight. With a little encouragement from Geoff’s employees “egging” him on to enquire about adoption, he crafted an email to AGSN about Blue. A few emails back and forth with the AGSN, a home visit, a quick trial and bam! Geoff welcomed Blue into his home and heart. A few months later he volunteered to foster another greyhound called “Ash”, who was languishing in the Goulbourn dog pound. Ash quickly formed a bond with Geoff and James and his fostering turned into a forever home.
Since adopting Blue and Ash, Geoff’s life has dramatically changed in a positive way. While he may never be able to reclaim his bed, he has two beautiful dogs to consume his time and energy. The ongoing support from the AGSN is priceless. He’s formed friendships with those involved in the AGSN and helps every way he can to promote the work and support the AGSN.
He’s so passionate about the cause and if the goal of $10,000.00 is reached within two months, Geoff will go under the tattoo gun and get a greyhound inspired tattoo to commemorate the event. Here is your chance to be generous and a little mischievous. It will be Geoff’s first tattoo.
