My name is Camila Maturana Palacios and I am a 27 year old Chilean-Canadian living in Calgary, Alberta. With help from several other Chileans living abroad (friends and family in Canada, Mexico, England, and USA), I created this gofundme page to support the tireless efforts of our family and friends in Chile, who desperately need our help as our country experiences the worst wildfires in its history. We are hoping to collect $5000 to purchase 100 hydration packs (valued at $50.25 each) for distribution among firemen. Hydration packs are being purchased locally by volunteers and will be delivered at fire stations. Any additional proceeds will be donated to a larger Chilean organization named Desafío Levantemos Chile which is collecting donations for emergency response throughout the country. Chile is currently experiencing a massive tragedy. Wildfires have decimated over 289,000 hectares of land, burned over 1000 homes to the ground, and claimed the lives of at least 10 people. More than 77 fires remain out of control, which need to be contained and extinguished ASAP, and Chile needs our help with this.
Chilean firefighters, who function as a 100% volunteer force, are taking 20 hour shifts in the flames and summer heat, which has exceeded 40 degrees celsius in some places, as they attempt to contain the situation. They urgently need help in the form of hydration packs, drinking water, first aid kits, and food. After an admirable effort by local communities to mobilize help and collect supplies, assistance in the form of some of these products at preferential prices has been obtained, but funds are still needed to purchase them.
Our small group has been in touch constantly with individuals acting locally over the past two days to determine the best way for us to help from our current countries of residence, and we have determined that raising money to assist the firefighters with supplies is the most effective way to help.
