Help Sue Kick AML Leukemia

Donation protected
Update:   Wednesday, 20 September 2018

*****  Due to some set backs that required additional hospitalizations, and additional numerous costs, your assistance is still Needed!     ****        Please read Sue's Story bellow:   *******

Two weeks into 2018, Sue complained on a severe head ache (unlike her normal migraines) and visited her Doctor. The doctor ran a blood panel, and concerned about the results, advised that she visit her Oncologist (who was also our daughter’s Oncologist when she had breast cancer). Because the Oncologist was also concerned about the panel results, Sue was scheduled for a bone marrow biopsy. Two days after the biopsy, the results were in – AML Leukemia.

AML Leukemia is a very aggressive form of leukemia which requires an even more aggressive form of chemo treatment, and  a bone marrow, or cord blood transplant. The whole process requires the patient to be hospitalized for 4 – 6 weeks.

Why is your donation important?

Cancer treatment, especially AML Leukemia treatment, is very – very expensive, and insurance will not cover all the costs. Between costs that insurance will not cover, high co-pay costs for medications, post chemo antibiotics (that will have to be taken for at least one year), deductibles, co-pays, transportation, lodging, food costs, etc.,  the costs are staggering.

So far since January, over $5,200 has been spent on housing, food, tolls, parking, taxis,  and transportation, all leading up to her transplant.

Sue will be going through an implant as part of treatment.  On  17 May, she will be admitted to the hospital to begin pre-transplant chemo and radiation treatments.  On approximately 23 May, she will receive her cord blood stem cell transplant.   Then 3 – 4 weeks after, she will be discharged and will have to remain within 20 minutes of the hospital for 70 days.  This will require that we move into local accommodations.  The approx. cost will be between $4,200 to $5,500 for HOUSING ALONE.  Then add in the costs of food and all the other expenses, the costs will be high.

Why is your donation important - Part II:

On August 25, 2018, Sue was discharged from the hospital - again.  She had to be readmitted after a bacteria infection.  This stay was a little over two weeks.   The discharged occurred on Day 94 after the transplant.  On Day 95 we met with the Oncology team, and was informed that do the hospitalization and infection, the combination left her body weak and behind on rehab.  Because of this combination, she will be released for home until at least Day 120 - normally you are discharged on Day 100.   This extra stay will result in extra costs such as housing, food, transportation, and other misc expenses, all of which is above and beyond the budget and puts a strain on an already tight money funds.  YOUR donations have, and will continue to do so, off-set these costs.  To say we can't do it without your assistance is an extreme understatement.

PLUS,  we own  a small, family run, business with no employees, and the  days the business is shut down, is a loss of income.

You can help in making a donation - any amount,  will go a long way to help off-set the costs.  We also ask that after reading our story, you please consider sharing this post.  THANK YOU!
