Emergency Care for Animal Shelter

Tax deductible
On Friday, September 14, 2018, the Carteret County Humane Society  sustained significant damage during Hurricane Florence.  The shelter was prepared for the storm, but circumstances changed when the building began to flood and the roof started to collapse.

Here is a link to an article from the USA Today about our shelter.

Staff, volunteers, and rescue workers were able to get some of the animals to a safer temporary location.  Due to misinformation, it was originally believed that all animals had been moved to safety on Friday 09/14/18.

At this point, they need financial help for the animal's immediate and upcoming  needs.

As of 9:00 on 09/16/18, 15 dogs and 44 cats still remain at the partially flooded animal shelter.  Staff are on site at both the shelter and the temporary location.  We expect the remaining animals to be transported to the temporary location throughout the day.

Funds are needed as soon as possible.  Currently, there is no safe drinking water at the shelter.  Dogs, cats, and staff do not have safe water to drink at the time of this post.

Immediate needs:
Clean water, dry dog and cat food, bowls, cat litter and litter boxes, cleaning supplies, rags, blankets are needed immediately.  At this point we do not know if the medical supplies can be saved or if they will have to be replaced.

Upcoming needs:
The temporary location is a building at a city park.  We can not use this location indefinitely and it is not designed to house animals.  Dogs and cats are crated, with limited space.  Many of the animals may be able to go to different rescue groups but will need transport and this costs money.

Reclaiming the shelter is going to be costly.  Ensuring that the facilities are sanitary and safe is high priority.  Supplies will need to be replaced, dog and cat kennels repaired, the building is in need of repairs, and this is just the start.

The primary focus right now is the safety of the approximately 120 dogs and cats who call the Carteret County Humane Society home right now.

I volunteer at this shelter and have seen how much they care about the animals.  I have two dogs and a cat from this shelter, all of whom received love and care by the shelter staff.  The pictures I've posted of individual animals are ones I personally know at the shelter.  They need our help.

All help is appreciated.  There are no words to describe the look of gratitude from a shelter pet.  These animals did not ask to be in need, but they appreciate every bit of help you can give.

About me:  My name is Nel Wallenberg and I live in Carteret County, NC.  I'm currently working overseas as a government employee so I am not physically in the disaster zone.  I've volunteered with the Carteret County Humane Society for over seven years.  I am in direct contact with one of the two shelter managers, Cassandra Tupaj.  I also have contact with Rachel Hardin, shelter manager.  All details of this fundraiser are being shared with Ms. Tupaj before posting to avoid misinformation.

Funds will be released directly to one of the shelter managers, I receive nothing from this.

This is Holly.  She is one of approximately 100 cats being cared for by the Carteret County Humane Society.
