Shaes’ Cancer Story

Our daughter Shae started out 2018 with a new weight lifting and exercise regimen. She started having pain and a small bump on the back of her leg which we thought was related to the exercise. When the bump didn’t go away and got more painful she saw a doctor and after an ultrasound and a cat scan they started talking about cancer.  Shae made a 3 ½ hour trip to Portland for a biopsy and what they thought was going to be a removal of a benign tumor, only to find out she had a high-grade soft tissue sarcoma.

Fast forward 7 months, Shae has had a surgical biopsy, 5 weeks of radiation and a second surgery in Portland to remove the tumor along with part of her hamstring.  Unfortunately, a complication of that surgery has been that the space where they removed the tumor keeps filling with fluid and getting infected. Shae had a 3rd surgery in August to drain the wound and take antibiotics only to have the wound continue to fill up and ooze down her leg.

Mid-September, Shae had a 4th surgery and now has a wound vac to help her heal and she gets to carry it everywhere with her over the next couple of months. She also has some very small spots on her lungs which have not been diagnosed as cancer, but they have to be monitored by a cat scan every 4 months in addition to a MRI of her leg.

Female Brewer Strong

Shae is a very strong woman having has worked the past 2 years in a very physical job as a brewer and more impressively she worked during her 5 weeks of  radiation therapy to her leg. She has also had 4 surgeries and between the pain in her leg and the constant upheaval of her GI tract from medications she has had many rough days. Shae shows such amazing strength by getting up each day and putting one foot in front of the other to keep moving forward in life. She goes into work when she is up to it, she cares for her sweet dog, socializes with friends when able, and most importantly she was  in her brother's wedding all while keeping up with the demands of every day life while constantly hurting and often feeling sick to her stomach.

You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice
Our sweet daughter Shae has grown up to be an extremely  independent soul. She moved to Iowa for school, Napa for a wine Internship and to Bend to brew beer without knowing a single person in any of these places. She will go to restaurants, movies and concerts on her own as well as out to explore the great outdoors, but also loves to do these things with friends and of course her dog.

Shae would never ask for help but as her mom and dad we know that she needs financial support for her cancer care and living expenses.  We are extremely grateful for anything you can contribute towards her expenses and helping Shae on her journey to KICK CANCER'S BUTT AND BILLS!

How the funds will be used

The funds will help to pay for Shae's Cobra insurance which is $800/month, in addition to the deductibles, co-pays and out of pocket fees, as well as travel expenses that are adding up.  They will also go to help with rent, living expenses, and her student loans.

If there are any additional funds they will go to helping Shae return to college as she will most likely need to change to a less physical career, or they will go to the St Charles cancer fund for massage, acupuncture and other alternative therapies for patients getting cancer treatment.  Please note these donations are considered a gift so they are not tax deductible.

Anything you can give is appreciated including your prayers and support and we thank your from the bottom of our hearts!

Dear Family and Friends
I wanted to update you on Shae’s Cancer Journey. It was a year ago she was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma after a surgical biopsy, followed by 5 weeks of radiation, and a surgical removal of the tumor. She had two surgeries for infections, a wound vac and another infection requiring home IV’s.
Shae was home for Christmas and we did a short snow shoe trip – we learned that you have to keep your wound vac warm or it freezes and stops working (Oops!)
The wound vac was removed in January after 4 mo and Shae has started on the long road to recovery with physical, occupational and massage therapy, and some mental health counseling as well. Gaining strength in her leg and treating her scar where the tumor and part of her hamstring was removed have been the primary goals. She has been released from therapy to start exercising, hiking, biking whatever she can tolerate as her endurance improves.
Shae has been working in the Lab at her Brewery rather than brewing as she can’t squat and lift the barrels and doesn’t have the stamina to do it. She is currently looking for jobs as a food scientist since she can’t go back to being a brewer and her degree is in food and fermentation science. She will most likely need to move out of Bend to find a new job.
We are planning to take Shae on a 12 day vacation in May to celebrate what we hope is the end of this chapter in her life although she will be getting leg and lung scans every 4 months for the next 2 years and then less often after that.
Shae could not have made it through this long journey without your financial support for her many medical bills (including this year’s out of pocket expenses) and more importantly your prayers and love.

We are truly grateful for your support!
Love Martin and Teresa

Happy New Year to all Shae's family, friends and many supporters! We were excited to have her home for Christmas and to learn that she is FINALLY healing well.

We hope her wound vac will finally come off in the next 4-6 weeks then on to physical therapy to get her strength and flexibility back. Thanks to all of you for your prayers and support over the past year! Martin, Teresa and Shae

Dear Friends and Family
I wanted to update you on Shae. She finished the last of her antibiotics this week and her wound is healing well. We have booked a flight for her to come home for Christmas and set up her wound care here in Montrose. She has increased her hours at work and things are looking up, but still has a long road of head with physical therapy to get her strength and flexibility back and quarterly scans.

We also wanted to thank the staffs of Montrose High School, Columbine and Centennial Middle Schools, and Pomona Elementary School for their Blue Jean fundraiser for Shae. We especially want to thank Academy Mortgage for matching the funds raised. The $3500 will go a long way towards her medical bills and living expenses as she works towards getting back to work full-time.
We hope you all have a Happy Holiday season and that you get a chance to spend time with your family and friends. We appreciate all your support and prayers! Martin, Teresa and Shae

Thanksgiving Update
Shae got her IV PICC line out this week and is on oral antibiotics for 2 more weeks. Her wound is continuing to heal but she will be wearing the wound vac 24/7 probably through the New Year.

The gofundme account has been a godsend for paying medical bills and living expenses as Shae has been unable to work during this last infection!

We are so thankful to all of you who have donated, sent words of support and shared the link on your social media! Please share this link again: gofundme.com/help-shae-kick-cancer039s-butt

Happy Thanksgiving! Martin and Teresa
