Help Settle Refugees in Vancouver

With an almost 0 vacancy rate in Vancouver’s rental housing market it is difficult for anyone, let alone newly arriving refugees, to access housing. Shahu and Kaameh (names have been changed for their protection) arrived in our city this fall and, of course, were having trouble finding a place to live, so for two months they were staying in a motel hoping something would open up for them. Through a series of connections they came to the attention of Journey Home Community (JHC). Knowing that a generous person in Vancouver was interested in housing a refugee family in their empty apartment, JHC was able to make all the necessary links and within a short time, this new refugee family had done the next to impossible – they were now comfortably settled in their own home and making connections in their community.
This is what Journey Home Community does - provides housing, resettlement assistance and relational support for newly arriving refugee claimant families. This past year we have been able to increase the number of refugee housing units we operate and, along with our partners, we have been able to actually increase the number of refugees we have taken in this year by approximately 50% (60 new individuals) over last year. This is in addition to the families we support in our transitional housing program.
Funds from this campaign will be used to support newly arrived refugee claimants in Vancouver, Canada. This will include helping refugee claimants in finding housing (short-term and long-term), in making connections to appropriate organizations to aid in making their refugee claims, and in providing relational support and care as they adjust to living in Vancouver. Your contribution will ensure that these refugee claimants will have the support they need.
