Help Send a Bronco to the Illinois Junior Classical League Convention. 2/16/17-2/18/17
Please help my students attend the Illinois Junior Classical League Convention. We are the only neighborhood high school within the Chicago Public School system to offer this beloved language. The Classics are simply timeless. In a city with unimaginable violence, poverty, and poorly funded schools, the words of Catullus, Ovid, Horace, Cicero, and Vergil are alive and well. They offer outlets of healing, discussions concerning self-esteem, the devastation of war, and its resulting PTSD (sadly, a condition so many CPS students must endure due to the gun violence daily impacting our streets).
For the last several years, I have been honored to take a delegation of students. Our first year, I delightfully brought 13 students. This past year we had the 2nd largest delegation ,54 students representing all groups at Kenwood.
In 2004, Kenwood had 35 Latin students which has grown to more than 185 students in 6 classes over the past few years. We are not just a Latin program. We are a family! All the students agreed that those individuals who can afford the full $275 should pay the entire amount so that more scholarship funds can go towards those students who need it! Frankly, their selflessness chocked me up. In fact, 10 freshmen students approached me and said, "Mrs. Strauss, let's give the seniors who have never gone, top priority for the scholarship money because we want ever Kenwood Latin student to experience convention at least once." That's who Broncos are- giving, thoughtful, and loving.
IJCL just isn't a convention held in a beautiful hotel in Itasca featuring exams concerning all things Latin or other creative arts competitions but an outlet to bring a group of diverse students together to learn about each other's experiences, bond with their own delegation, and make new friends from school which they would have otherwise never encountered. Without a doubt, it is a highlight of our Latin program's year. The students cannot stop talking about it!
Unfortunately , every student who wishes to attend is not able to afford the entire registration, hotel and transportation costs for the weekend. Your donation can help pay for a Kenwood student to attend the event and represent Kenwood with pride. We are seeking to raise $10,000-- enough to fund full and partial scholarships for some 100+ Kenwood students who would otherwise be unable to join us. No gift is too large or too small. We appreciate every contribution made towards this great effort. Thank you for your support of our scholars!
