Help Send CHSVFT to Nationals!

The sport of ultimate was invented by Columbia High School students in 1968 in the Columbia student parking lot in Maplewood, New Jersey. Celebrating our fiftieth year, Columbia is the longest running team in the sport. Ultimate is now played in over 80 countries, was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 2015,  and is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Columbia continues to be a powerhouse with 14 New Jersey state championships, a 2008 Easterns championship, and many other awards and championships. We have a very high level of participation at Columbia, with over 60 students trying out this fall, and each player offered a spot on either the Varsity, JV-A or JV-B team. This year has been an especially strong year having come in first place at the Coconut Classic, Midnight Madness, and Radnor Invite tournaments. Because of our strong performance, we have been ranked in the top 20 teams in the nation and are one of just six teams invited to the prestigious Paideia Cup tournament in Atlanta, Georgia and one of 16 teams invited to the High School National Invite in Rockford, Illinois!

Ultimate is a self-funded sport at Columbia that does not receive any financial support from the school district. Team expenses, including coaching stipends, uniforms, tournament entry fees, and travel expenses, are paid for with a combination of player dues and fundraising. Because there are so few local ultimate teams in our area, the team must travel to compete in tournaments. Though we do our best to economize - by enlisting parents to drive to out-of-town tournaments and having players stay with host families whenever possible - the expenses add up. Competing in the National Invite will require purchasing airline tickets for 23 players, a coach, and four chaperones to fly to Illinois, plus hotels, van rentals, meals, and the tournament bid fee. Each player is making a significant personal contribution towards these expenses, with team dues set at $1,000 for the spring season. We still need to raise additional funds to fully cover the cost of competing at the national level. We would be grateful for any donation, no matter the size.
