Camp Kesem is a nationwide, free, weeklong summer camp for children affected by a parent's cancer.
Cancer touches all of our lives. For Camp Kesem campers (6000+ of them this past summer!), they are facing the adult-sized responsibilities associated with a parent battling cancer, in remission, or having lost a parent.
Camp Kesem is their one week of the year to just be a kid. As camper families have said, it is a WOO-HOO camp, not a boo-hoo camp.
I am so passionate about this mission that I recently joined their Alumni Leadership Board, a junior board dedicated to fundraising and strategic support. My commitment this year is to raise enough funds to send 3 campers to camp. With the power of the 3x Giving Tuesday match for LinkedIn employees, I need your help raising $750 (plus 3x match = $3000 - enough to send 3 kids to Camp Kesem!!)
My first year as a Yellow Unit counselor (ages 9-10, one of the silliest age groups)
Kesem is a safe, supportive, and FUN environment for kids 6-16 to talk about the difficult situations they are facing and connect with other kids affected by a parent's cancer. The Kesem magic doesn't end there -- the community and memories formed at camp last far beyond one week.
Teen camper Neptune visited the Empire State Building - people thought he was my little brother at camp!
I've been a counselor with Camp Kesem for 4 years, and by my senior year, I was co-leading the organization. As an alumni, I plan on staying connected to my Camp Kesem family. Safe to say it completely transformed my college experience and future trajectory. Camp Kesem at UCLA is one of the largest chapters of Camp Kesem, serving over 225 campers per summer! Camp Kesem chapters, 80+ nationwide, are entirely student-run, and provide students a huge leadership opportunity. As much as we are role models for our campers, the 80+ UCLA counselors are constantly inspired by our campers.
Due to the financial burdens families battling cancer face, Camp Kesem is provided entirely free of charge. It costs approximately $1000 to send one camper to camp and offer yearround support. With unbelievable LinkedIn matching donations from employees for Giving Tuesday, help reach the goal of sending 3 children to Camp Kesem for FREE this summer!
