Please help save the home of an elderly woman who was robbed of her home by an unscrupulous condominium association that charged her outrageous late fees for 17 months in a row, although she only ever made one payment late. She now needs $4,555.53 to redeem her home from the company that bought it at foreclosure in January. She has ONE WEEK to get her home back by paying this amount. Her attorney is preparing to sue the condo association for its unconscionable behavior, but this lawsuit cannot save her home.
Doña Maria is 86 years old and lives on benefits of around $800/month. She bought a condo to live in for the rest of her life when she turned 68 and finished paying it off five years ago. For eighteen years, she has paid her condo association $240 every month to maintain the common grounds. It also charges her a $250 "special assessment" once a year.
In 2015, she was four months late on her "special assessment" payment. As soon as she missed thispayment, her condo association began charging her $90 in late fees every month. Even after she paid the assessment, it kept charging her $90 in late fees every month for more than another year because she was behind on late fees by then. By the time they foreclosed, she had paid all her monthly payments on time, all her special assessments, and even an additional $320 in late fees. Still, they foreclosed on her in January around $1300 in late fees. A company bought the condo for about $4K-- what she owed plus all the attorneys' fees and other fees the condo association piled on. She must pay that company $4,555.53 by April 3d.
Please help Doña Maria! If she misses this deadline, will lose $80,000 in equity from the loss of her condo. Meanwhile, the company will make a huge profit. She will also be homeless despite having worked so hard to ensure she would have a home in her old age. We have asked for more than the price of redemption, because she will also face another $4K in charges from her condo association if she gets the home back in her name. Any amount will help. Please do not let this great injustice destroy the life of this elder in our community.
