ABOUT ME

Hi everyone!  I am Satomi Kawai, living in Iowa City, IA, USA.  I work in contemporary jewelry, printing, and drawing.  When I moved to the states, I brought with me traditional Japanese art practices; calligraphy, flower arranging, and tea ceremonies. I moved to Iowa City about nineteen years ago and started my academic art education in 2003 at the University of Iowa.  My purpose in the program was to use visual art as a way to express my personal methodology and to continue identifying who I am. I received a Master of Fine Art (MFA) degree specializing in Metalsmithing and Jewelry Design in 2006. Since then I have been working as a studio artist in my home studio.

WHAT MY ART IS ABOUT

My visual art practice includes jewelry, printing, and drawing. My art speaks of nature and my personal femininity.  I have felt a strong tie to my natural surroundings since I was a child, living in a nature-rich suburb of a local city in Wakayama prefecture.  I am also surrounded by nature in Iowa City and my inspirations are abundant in every moment here. After moving to the United States, I also had to reevaluate my personal femininity with respect to living in a western culture, observe myself as a transplanted person and adjusted during the last nineteen years.

HOW I INCORPORATE MOVEMENT INTO MY LIFE AND ART

In addition to my visual art practice, I am also passionate about dance fitness, specifically Zumba.  Three years ago, I started taking group fitness classes to increase my energy level in order to complete my artwork. I have been a certified Zumba instructor at the University of Iowa Campus Recreational and Wellness Center for two years. Most recently I have taken an adult ballet class at the University of Iowa to enhance physical balance and strength. Dancing for me is not only for physical activity but also relates to my personal femininity and plays a big part in my artistic practice. I want to continue exploring these practices together to enhance my personal artistic expression, exploring the theme of growing as a female visual artist.

MY PARTICIPATION IN “INITIATION 2018 KALLICHORON” -  COMBINING ALL MY ART PRACTICES!

I have recently been accepted as a member of an art project called Initiation 2018_KALLICHORON, organized by Loukia Richards and Christoph Ziegler. This art project includes an Artist Residency program with curated visits to Athens archaeological sites & museums’ collections etc., four intensive workshops on trial dance/performances/storytelling with media work, between January 22 and 28, 2018 in Athens, Greece. It also includes the following group show in Florian Trampler Gallery in Munich, Germany, from March 8 to 11, 2018 during the Munich Jewelry Week. This is a very prestigious event including many contemporary jewelry exhibitions, such as Schmuck exhibition. To be included in this artist residency and Munich Jewelry Week furthers my dreams of combining my artistic practice and body movement to create a new art direction. I am getting very excited about this adventure and where it can take me in my artistic pursuits!
