From Sarah
“I'm normally pretty good with words, but I haven't yet found the way to express how grateful and astonished we are at the level of support we've gotten through this GoFundMe (and how quickly!). I could never have imagined this level of response, and I will never, ever forget it. I find asking for help really difficult, and to have our community support us this way has been a great reminder for me of how important it is. Thank you so much to everyone who shared, who donated, who spared a thought for us as we deal with with this, and for making the financial part of having cancer so much less stressful and worrisome. You know who to ask the next time you need a favor.

Thank you!

Sarah”

The following is a note from Sarah:
Hey, friends - I won't lie, I feel weird about doing this, but it does seem to be the best option.

My former boss / current friend and mentor Brian Simmons has kindly set up a GoFundMe to help me deal with the financial reality of having leukemia. I know that I'm a lot luckier, and in a lot better position, than a lot of people, but I still could use some help.

Because of my chemo schedule, I can't work - I'm currently on unpaid medical leave from my job. They are generously holding my job for me, keeping me on their insurance plan (more on this later), and have been very understanding throughout this whole process, but ultimately I'm not working, so I'm not getting paid.

Here's some context around how we chose the number we chose:

-$11,000 is for my lost salary over the three months that I'm out for chemo. I'm very lucky in that my insurance covers my actual medical costs (more on this later also), but I still have to pay rent, buy food, pay all of the rest of my bills, etc.

-$3,500 is for the deductible and out-of-pocket max of my insurance plan; once this is paid, my insurance plan will cover my medical costs at 100% (which I'm very grateful for, and I know I'm very lucky to have), but that's still a significant set of bills for me to pay.

-$500 is to pay my job back for them covering the cost of my insurance while I'm out - they're paying for this now, but when I return to work in June (hopefully), they'll ask me to pay this back, right when I'm likeliest to be at the very end of my resources..

I know that finances are rough for a lot of people, and I completely understand if this is not a way that you can help, but if this seems like a good fit for you, it would definitely be really appreciated.

Let me know if you have any questions!
