Help Samantha: Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer
Donation protected
Hi there, my name is Samantha. Thank you for reading.
My husband and I are the proud parents of a 4-1/2-year-old and twin 1-1/2-year-old daughters. Shortly after the twins were born, I started having a toothache and made a dentist appointment. After several tests and a biopsy, I received an unthinkable diagnosis: a large tumor was growing in my jaw. It was breast cancer. I had Stage 4 breast cancer, metastasized into my bones and, we would find out later, my liver.
I'm lucky to have been born into a time when modern medicine has come so far. I underwent six months of chemotherapy and have been on two IV-administered drugs called targeted treatment for over a year. My cancer is stable and my prognosis is good: Herceptin has been on the market for over fifteen years, and there are women with Stage 4 breast cancer still alive from when it was first released. Perjeta was put into use only two years ago, and it will also hopefully keep the tumors in check. Stage 4 is incurable, but this is a battle I will never give up fighting.
As you might imagine, this past year has been incredibly difficult for my entire family. I'm on Long-Term Disability, and my husband is off work to help take care of us. I'm still recovering from chemo, and several other medications leave me drained and struggling on a daily basis. I also suffer from depression and anxiety, which makes every day a roller coaster. My treatment happens every three weeks at the hospital, along with various other appointments.
Your support will be used to help us with additional therapies I need, childcare, and basic necessities. My medical bills are covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan, but I'm also undergoing physiotherapy and psychotherapy and paying for a plethora of medications. My husband's and my family don't live nearby, so we rarely get relief from doctor appointments and child-rearing.
If you'd prefer to donate food, cleaning services, or babysitting, we'd absolutely love that!
Thank you!
