On Friday, May 11th around 1:30 in the morning, a father received a call that can only be described as every parent’s nightmare. Robert Ullmann had learned that his son, Ryan Ullmann, 22, had gotten into a severe motorcycling accident after deciding to take a late night drive in West Palm Beach, Florida. Family members rushed to St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach only to be told that even though he had worn a protective helmet, he was suffering from a severe brain injury, was currently in surgery, and it was possible that he wouldn’t make it through the night. At the time, the only thing that the family members were aware of was that he had gone over the front of his handlebars and luckily enough, had landed in front of a fire station where police were on hand to assist Ryan in getting to the hospital. The family became anxious and nervous as they silently waited for a medical professional to let them know if Ryan had survived the surgery.

It was at 4 A.M. that the family was informed that the surgery had been as successful as possible, that it had been necessary for them to remove the left side of his skull, and that he had been placed in a medically induced coma. As the family continued to receive more information from the medical professionals they realized that this nightmare wasn't even close to being over. His strong will and steel heart had pulled him through the first part, but his journey wasn't even close to being over. After being in the medically induced coma for almost an entire month, the family struggled to try to figure out what would be next. Since Ryan wasn't offered any medical insurance from his place of work, the family wouldn't be able to afford the upcoming surgeries and therapies that were necessary to help Ryan recover. More importantly, this meant that Ryan could not have the left side of his skull placed back which would severely affect his day to day lifestyle. Not only is Ryan missing half of his skull, but he has limited use of the right side of his body and has begun to lose motor functions. Ryan can barely walk, and he can barely speak above a whisper due to the paralysis in his vocal chords. Simple things like speaking, eating or standing up straight have become difficult tasks for Ryan since the horrific accident. Ryan was released from the hospital a day before his 23rd birthday and has since been home. However, due to lacking insurance, neither he or his family members have the ability to pay for the necessary therapy and surgeries he will need three times a week for the next few years. The family was also informed that the longer they wait to begin these services, the more damaged his overall health can become. Over 90 days ago the family applied for Medicaid and submitted a claim for disability, but neither of these claims has been recognized even with the dire circumstances.

Ryan is a man with the ability to feel compassion that was bigger than his existence. He himself worked at Martin Memorial North hospital transporting the patients to receive care for themselves. He adored his job and treated each and every person with the utmost responsibility and love that went above and beyond the job's characteristics. He gave back to his community by helping others, and if you were to ask friends and family members, they would say that he is the kind of man that would take the shirt off his back if it meant helping someone in need. So now that he is in need, it is important for everyone to bond together to make sure that a human being who is so compassionate to others, is receiving the same compassion in return. At most, Ryan hopes that the left side of his skull can be returned so that he will be able to live somewhat of a normal life. These days, he can no longer drive, he can no longer do the job he devoted himself too, and he cannot go anywhere without others. All the money donated in this campaign will go to Ryan's future therapeutic sessions and future surgeries that have been long overdue so that he will be able to get back to enjoying a full and beautiful life.
