HELP US BUILD A RESCUE AND SANCTUARY FOR HOMELESS DOGS

A GoFundMe Campaign out of San Diego by the founders of Rescuing Cujo, a group of good friends who started this non-profit organization dedicated to saving homeless dogs, providing them shelter, finding them homes and providing a sanctuary for those who may never get adopted.

THE ORIGINS OF OUR RESCUE
We named our shelter Rescuing Cujo in honor of one of our founder’s dog, Cujo, a lab/pit mix. He was found in May 2000, wandering the streets of Los Angeles at only four months old. It was pretty well known that the name “Cujo”, the title of a novel written by horror-king Stephen King, might cause some people to wonder why a sweet puppy would have that name. But Cujo, who grew into a beautiful 85 pound dog, was able to show people that dogs who might have a look or reputation of a “Cujo”, could be rescued and adopted into loving homes.

Cujo grew up to be such a friendly, fun dog, who loved people, kids and other dogs.  He was a great source of love, happiness and companionship. Cujo was the inspiration to start a rescue so that other dogs could have the same chance at life that he did. He was proof of how wonderful dogs can be, even those who cause fear because of their size, look or breed.

All four of the founders of Rescuing Cujo are avid dog lovers. We’ve always had dogs in our lives, because we know and appreciate the unconditional love dogs have for people, and what happiness they can bring into a home. That is why we are committed to helping homeless dogs and saving dogs from being euthanized at high-kill shelters, because we believe that dogs deserve more. If, for whatever reason, a dog cannot be adopted into a home, the dog will live out the rest of it’s life at our rescue/sanctuary, and will enjoy daily walks and play time in the dog parks, and get lots of affection, just like the dogs who can be adopted.

WHAT WE HAVE DONE SO FAR
Personal funds were used to purchase 20 acres of land in Jamul, California, a small mountainous community about 25 minutes from downtown San Diego. Grading and building permits were obtained from the county to prepare the land and to build the structure. Not only is the shelter being built on this property, but there will be dog parks and pathways for the dogs to enjoy and get exercise. One dog park area has been cleared of brush, and pathways are being cleared by the founders and volunteers.

Much to our surprise, we were generously gifted a very nice donation that greatly helped with the initial costs associated with the materials and some of the labor to build the dog structure, a 2300 square foot building.

As you can see from the video, things are moving along at a nice pace, and we can’t wait to open and start saving dogs. However, there are still significant costs associated with getting Rescuing Cujo up and running, so we decided to start our GoFundMe campaign and ask other dog lovers out there in this world to consider contributing to our cause.

WHAT WE STILL NEED TO DO
Our most immediate needs for funding are for materials/labor needed to build:

1.)  a bathroom and small kitchen in the dog structure;

2.)  two quarantine rooms that will house homeless dogs until they are cleared of any contagious diseases;

3.)  additional enclosures inside the structure for the dogs;

4.)  25 dog doors that will allow the dogs to go inside or outside during the day;

5.)  enclosures for outside the dog structure;

6.)  a county-required perimeter fence around the dog structure;

7.)  a dog park.

Our goal is to have Rescuing Cujo up and running, saving as many dogs as permitted by the size of our facility, before the end of June 2018. The anticipated completion date for the dog structure is June 22, 2018. Before we can obtain the kennel license from the county, we will need the perimeter fence in place.

ONE FINAL THOUGHT
Even though Cujo crossed over the proverbial Rainbow Bridge in 2014, his memory will live on in our dog rescue/sanctuary. By donating to Rescuing Cujo’s GoFundMe Campaign, you can help us save homeless dogs, and dogs in high-kill shelters from euthanasia.  All donations will be used towards the dogs’ comfort and needs; Rescuing Cujo’s Founders/Board of Directors do not receive any financial compensation and there aren’t any employees…we’re volunteer-based with the sole purpose of helping dogs in need.

Thank you for considering Rescuing Cujo. We are truly grateful for any donation you can give towards our cause, and know that it is being spent wisely towards helping dogs in need. We would also greatly appreciate it if you would please share our GoFundMe Campaign with your network of friends.
