Rebuilding the Kalinago way

Donation protected
Irvince Auguiste is a village leader, and former chief of the Kalinago people of Waitukubuli, known as Dominica in the Caribbean. On September 18th 2017 his island was devastated by ravaging category five hurricane María. His village was one of the most impacted on the island. After María only five houses remained standing in his community.

Irvince's house and car were totally destroyed. Three of his sons were injured. One of them was covered under a concrete wall of their house. Due to his severe injuries, he had to be flown to another island for medical attention.

Irvince’s family survived, but those in the village are still living in tents, in temporary houses without proper roof or facilities for a dignified new beginning. Nearly a year after losing everything, tired of waiting for governmental help and in the fear of the upcoming hurricane period, Irvince now asks you for help.

Irvince's plan, is to rebuild his community the Kalinago way. Traditionally, circular Kalinago houses were built to withstand extreme weather events, and now he wants to blend traditional design with modern technology to restore this important part of Kalinago culture and provide his community safe, long-term housing.

The requested amount will be spent on buying materials and tools for construction of these homes. If required the details of expenses spent will be provided through email. If you contribute to this account, Irvince has stated that you are welcome to visit his community and stay in his land, where you will be received with all hospitality and gratitude.

Thank you.
