Help Provide Free Medical Care in Nepal

Donation protected
Namaste! My name is Anmol and I am an undergraduate student from the University of California, Davis, who is currently in Northeast Kathmandu, Nepal as a Blum Center for Developing Economies Summer Fellow. I am very fortunate to be working with the amazing Friends of Shanta Bhawan, Nepal (FSB) , a non-profit and non-governmental health medical out-patient center located in Kathmandu, for the next 8 weeks.

For the past 36 years, FSB has provided subsidized quality primary health care services to all individuals, regardless of financial status. In fact, the clinic serves approximately 30,000 marginalized and impoverished individuals per year, and we hope to keep this number growing every day!

During my time with FSB, our clinic aims to host another annual health camp, which is a 1-day event where the clinic provides FREE medical care for communities around our clinic who are unable to pay our usual subsidized clinic fee (100 NPR (Nepalese rupees) for new patients, and 75 NPR for returning patients). With approximately 29% of Nepal’s population living under the poverty line, having this event will make a significant impact on the quality of many people’s lives.

Our clinic also utilizes Nepalese female community health workers who are usually unpaid volunteers who provide health education to communities. Our clinic partners with at least 5 community health workers for our health camps. We train them and also give them a stipend for helping promote our health camps and services prior to the event, as they usually are outreaching in communities for 3-4 days.

At the health camp, patients will be assessed by our qualified healthcare practitioners as needed, including doctors, nurses, and/or laboratory and medical imaging technicians. Patients of all ages will have full access to a variety of treatments such as antenatal care, vaccinations, and check-ups, free of charge. In past years, health camps have provided medical care to 300+ people in a single day!

Our health camps are fully funded through the generous support of donors from around the world. This will cover the costs of our healthcare practitioners and support staff, laboratory testing materials, medical imaging equipment, vaccines, medications, and administration/promotional supplies.

I’m personally excited to add that on top of providing our usual services, we will also be providing 50 need-based pap smears for the first time at an FSB health camp. I will also be conducting a survey at the health camp to better understand and evaluate the needs of communities located in and around Northeast Kathmandu, as well as better understand and evaluate the barriers to access of healthcare services. This will be very helpful to the sustainability of our services because the central location of the FSB clinic has allowed the clinic to serve as a culturally competent and sensitive healthcare hub for various ethnic communities found in Nepal.

The health camp will be administered once we have reached our goal of $1700 USD, we are hoping to have these funds by the first week of August. For the Health Camp funds will be allocated as follows:

General Health Camp Services: approx. $1200 USD --> 132,000 NPR (varies depending on # of patients)

50 pap smears (supplies and laboratory testing fees): $300 USD --> 33,000 NPR

Stipends for 5 Nepalese Community Health Workers: $200 USD --> 22,000 NPR

Total Amount for August Health Camp: $1700 USD --> 187,000 NPR

***********************************************************************************

I have set the fundraising goal for $5000, as there are many much needed items our clinic needs to continue providing efficient and high quality diagnostic tools and treatments to our patients. We are hoping with any additional funds to purchase a solar powered World Health Organization (WHO) certified refrigerator for pediatric vaccines (approx. $3000 USD/ 330,000 NPR), and then put the remaining donations towards our goal of building a birthing center for the clinic, which would allow expecting mothers to receive treatment from our healthcare personnel throughout the entire course of the birthing cycle, from conception to antenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care. This would reduce the complications of sending pregnant women to other birthing centers, and would provide our patients with the comfort and familiarity of seeing the same doctor throughout the pregnancy process.

If you are interested to help, please spread the word about our clinic, share this video, and/or donate. Every contribution makes a big difference and is very much appreciated!

With great gratitude,

Anmol and the FSB Family
