Help Pilot Pull Through

Donation protected
Pilot has been with me through a lot.  Yesterday, 2/19/19, Pilot started showing signs that something wasn't right.  Jon got him to the vet, and in spite of Pilot acting normally by this time, we had them run some tests to be safe.  Pilot tested positive for having been poisoned, and the likely culprit is antifreeze.  As soon as we got this result, Pilot was rushed from his normal vet Catoosa Small Animal Hospital, to Animal Emergency Clinic because they had the necessary antidote if we were going to try to save him.

Meanwhile, our thoughts turned to the other animals.  Not knowing how, where, or when Pilot would have had access to antifreeze or any other poison (we don't even own antifreeze), we couldn't know that the other dogs wouldn't have found the same thing Pilot had.  Shasta and Fox went to AEC to have tests run, and thankfully have tested clear for now.
Pilot remained stable through the night and his wonderful emergency vets felt he would be okay to go back to his regular vet this morning to continue treatment.  One vial of the antidote alone costs nearly $600 and Pilot requires constant monitoring and blood tests at this stage.  If everything goes well, the best case scenario is that he may be able to come home tomorrow or the following day, and his kidney function will need to be checked several times after that.  There is a chance that his treatments won't work and he might not make it out of this.

This is incredibly scary and not something we anticipated.  While I don't want to think that someone could have thrown something into our yard and done this maliciously, there have been reports of that kind of thing in Tulsa recently.  Please, be vigilant for your fur babies.  Check your yards, even if you are like us and either don't keep chemicals around at all or think you have done a good job to secure them.  I wouldn't wish this on anyone.

While we can't guess our total expenses yet, the vet estimated that for Pilot's best-case-scenario treatment we are looking at $3000+.  Shasta and Foxtrot's tests were $150 each.  Above you can see that the total for our one night at AEC is $1,300 and this doesn't reflect any of his care at Catoosa Small Animal.  We have opened care credit and are lucky to have access to it immediately, but it is only going to get us so far.

They are optimistic that Pilot has a good shot at recovery, but are also noticeably reluctant to get our hopes up.  Every little bit helps, and shares are incredibly helpful too.  Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out, offered food and help searching the yard, and sent good vibes our way.  I can't imagine where I'd be without my first born pup, and I hope to still have more years ahead with my professional studio assistant, therapist, and all around good boy.
