Our charming, wise and talented friend Chef Paul Parker has just begun cancer treatments at Glens Falls Hospital. He has tongue cancer that has spread to the lymph nodes in his neck. We’re gratified to know that his prognosis is very good. Surgery is not the plan. However, his short-term experience of chemotherapy and radiation is expected to be — not so great.

Paul and Cheryl are uniquely  passionate, smart and engaged people. They love nothing more than to gather people around them — to entertain, whether it be a restaurant full of satisfied patrons who are likely to become friends (if you’re reading this, you may well be in that category), or a houseful of guests they’ve invited for an extemporaneous Sunday night dinner — vagabonds and stray cats welcome! Their restaurants have been so much more than just a place to dine out. Paul and Cheryl are the best at building a uniquely warm community around the pleasures of excellent food, good drink, entertaining stories, music and song in a welcoming setting.

Now, they could use some community themselves, to help overcome this daunting adversary, cancer.

Paul will likely be out of work for several weeks at least as he deals with the side effects of his treatment. They have insurance, but the expected co-pays, deductibles, related medical expenses and non-medical side costs are, frankly, scary.

You can help by passing on your good wishes here, making a donation if you can, and sharing this fund-raising effort with others who you think might care to help.

Thank you in advance for any financial aid you can give, and for the warm and healing thoughts that will help Paul, Cheryl, Nico and Léo know they are not alone at this challenging time.

Long-delayed update:

Yesterday, Chef Dominic Colose delivered a check to Paul and Cheryl from the Chez Sophie Reunion Party. With that and some cash donations during the event, they received more than $12,000 to help with medical and other expenses associated with Paul’s treatment. Wahoo!

Besides these hugely appreciated funds, the party was a warm embrace, uplifting Paul and the whole family as they were surrounded by colleagues, customers and friends from the Chez Sophie days to the present. Good memories shared and new ones made. What a pleasure to see the smile in Paul’s eyes all night.

Here’s a link to Dominic’s post about the party. Paul and Cheryl echo emphatically his thanks to all who participated. We add a huge thank you to Dominic, for leading the charge. (Hoping the link, links.)

And here are T.R. Laz’s fabulous pictures from the event, on Facebook.

What's happening with Paul?
The second chemo treatment on April 22 knocked his stuffing out, a bit. The April 29 Chez Sophie party was a rallying point. It’s been tough since then, especially getting enough calories and hydration, between the physical challenges of radiation and the nastiness of the chemo. Everything tastes like sh-t, Paul will tell you. Very hard to get anything down in any quantity.

Paul had his third and final chemo treatment this Monday, May 13. Friday is the last of the radiation treatments. Likely to be a slog for some little time still. Then, it’s uphill from there. Good music, good food shows (of all things) and comedy, conniving about recipes and restaurant ideas, fun stories on the news feeds - he keeps engaged these ways.

Here’s a picture of the little indoor garden Cheryl set up in the living room where Paul’s been hanging out a lot. Your well wishes and good thoughts, support and love are more meaningful than Paul or Cheryl have time to tell you right now. Know that you are appreciated.

Week four of Paul's cancer treatments begin today with a full morning of blood work, doctor meeting, daily weekday radiation and his second of three planned chemo treatments.

So far Paul's been a trouper. Worst effect is losing his sense of taste - hopefully not a permanent thing. Otherwise, he's been quite tired, had a some hair loss - beard only (symmetrical, resulting in a goatee and muttonchops effect), some trouble swallowing.

Doctors' orders: Eating healthy, hydrating, swallowing - and talking! - are all therapeutic.

We're hoping the next round of chemo goes as well as the first. Thank you for all your support, good wishes, and sharing this Go Fund Me page.

In the service of engaged interest that maybe some of you share with Paul, we're including a picture of the Tron-like hard plastic mesh mask that keeps him from moving during radiation.

Through the generosity of friends, community and colleagues, we are more than half-way to the fund-raising goal to help Paul Parker and his family through his cancer treatments.

Week two of those treatments is also half-way through. Paul is doing quite well, and in typical spirit. He and Cheryl are bowled over by your kindness.

Note also the super-chef "Chez Sophie Reunion" fund-raising dinner and auction planned on Monday, April 29, at the former diner in Malta that was Chez Sophie's longtime home.

THANK YOU for pitching in, and for continuing to spread the word. I'm throwing in a charming old picture here that's been circulating around. Blast from the past.
