Help Patricia Wilson Save her Eyesight

Appeal to Help an Elderly Widow and Avid Reader Save her Eyesight.

Patricia Wilson is a well known and loved fan of authors in the indie writer community. In recent years she’s been a proofreader for a number of favorite authors. In 2016 Patricia was widowed and in need of assistance. Authors and fellow readers rose to the occasion with a GoFundMe campaign that helped pay for funeral expenses and immediate needs. Since then she has supplemented her Social Security with proofreading. That too is now in jeopardy. As she explains it:

“I've known I have Macular Degeneration since 2012 but didn't expect to lose so much of my sight so soon. It seems my eyesight is going faster for reasons I know not. I first noticed my loss when I started having to make the font on my Kindle bigger and bigger. Before 2015 I read 50 - 100 books a year. Now I'm blessed if I get through 12 in a year. A few months ago, I suffered a severe headache that concerned my doctor enough to send me to an ocular neurologist. The neurologist apologized because she couldn't help me but made an appointment with a doctor of low vision. I was examined by this doctor last week. After an extensive examination he told me there was nothing he could do for my left eye because there is a big blank spot there, but there is hope for my right eye. A telescopic lens is what he prescribed. Using a sample in his office I was able to see newsprint. I haven't been able to read actual print of any kind for years. The only print I can read is in on my Kindle. I can't even read a flyer. So, the plan is a telescopic lens for my right eye and a plain blacked out lens for my left eye. He said my left eye is interfering with my vision in my right eye. I know this is true because I must close my left eye when I read. These glasses the doctor prescribed look like any pair of regular glasses. I now have hope to regain some of what I have lost but not the resources or vision coverage to pay for it.”

As authors and readers, we have great empathy for Patricia’s plight. Her love of reading is undeniable. Restoring some of her vision would be a priceless gift. The cost of the glasses is $2,500. Doctors visits and some special reading lights are another $1,000. Therefore, we are setting a GoFundMe goal of at least $3,500. We hope you will join us in helping Patricia continue to experience the joy of reading in her golden years.
