Help Our Houston Friends!

Dear Friends,

Hurricane Harvey unleashed massive destruction on families in Houston, and severely impacted our friends at YES Prep North Forest School.  The Growing Peace Project is sponsoring this campaign to support a group of YES Prep volunteers who are providing meals to students and their families.

Krystle Bowman, teacher at YES Prep (one of our 2014 partner schools) has this to say about their urgent needs after Harvey:

"I was able to look at some surveys filled out by parents of students at our school.  There are a number of families who have lost everything.  When asked their greatest need most families replied "food" and "cleaning supplies."  The school is currently able to meet the needs of the cleaning supplies, but not necessarily the food.  They're able to offer some canned goods, crackers, and a few other items, but nothing families can make a decent meal out of.  Besides that, many families are staying in temporary housing, hotels, campers, etc, and don't have access to refrigerators or ovens.  Even the families who are able to remain in their homes are without power and unable to have hot meals.

So, some friends and I have decided to create a makeshift meal kitchen that we will run out of the school to meet these families' needs.  We plan to meal prep and send home hot meals by way of insulated bags and Tupperware with students from these families.  I think grocery store gift cards would go a long way in supporting us in this project.

So far we've raised enough money to execute Round 1, which will be about 100 meals (dishes that will feed at least 6-8 people).  My thought is that your contribution could help us fund Round 2.  WalMart or Amazon gift cards would be greatly beneficial.

Thank you for consistently checking in and offering to donate funds to help our students' families get back on track.  I cannot let it go unsaid that I am extremely grateful for your thoughtfulness and generosity throughout this process."

It was such a joy to work with Krystle and her students, and we are saddened to hear that many of the students' families lost everything in the hurricane.  We have started this campaign to help Krystle and her team provide immediate food relief to those families that were affected.

Please help keep families strong and kids well-nourished during this difficult time.  100% of funds will be sent to Krystle and her team to help them feed the families of YES Prep.  Please give as much and as soon as you can.

Let's show some love.

Thank you!

In 2014 YES Prep North Forest participated in The Growing Peace Project's peacemaking, social justice, and youth activism program, with several students attending our culminating leadership retreat at our retreat site here in Vermont.  Here they are on the steps of Dartmouth College with their partner school, KIPP North Star Academy, from Minneapolis, MN.
