June 8 - first day I brought her home

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I adopted Nova on June 8 from CAARE (Companion Animal Advocacy Rescue Effort), after she was rescued from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut.
She’s an adorable, feisty, happy puppy who loves to play with her friends in the neighbourhood. She is extremely friendly and so loved.

Unfortunately, within the first week I started to notice she was having stomach issues and her struggles have continued since then.  Nova has been through so much in her short 4.5 months of life so far:

-On June 18, she was diagnosed as having a bacterial infection in her stomach. Antibiotics did not work, so I brought her back on June 23 and 24 for barium swallow and several x rays. It was determined that there was a foreign body in her stomach. She threw it up on June 25 and it is believed to have been in her stomach for about 3 weeks as it was a material I did not recognize.

-August 15 she was diagnosed with having another bacterial infection in her stomach and is currently still on antibiotics. She’s on gastrointestinal food.

-She had a diagnosis of Primary Glaucoma on July 3 at Bridgwater Animal Hospital after it was missed by the initial vet at Pembina Animal Hospital - Dr Scammel - who saw her on July 1. Dr Scammel examined her but failed to test her eye pressure.

-Nova's eye had been too damaged by the high pressure and was not responding to treatment which she received for over 48 hours

-Her eye was removed on July 5 and she was spayed that same day

Since the eye enucleation, Nova adjusted so well. She had 12 staples and a cone on for almost two weeks but even so, she was wanting to play and her strength was coming back. It seemed like she was doing great, and most importantly, she was pain free.

Then, on August 22 in the evening, I noticed Nova was bumping into things, stumbling on the steps, and she did not seem to have any vision in her remaining eye. This was a stark contrast to her behaviour even just hours before when she had gone for a walk and seemed completely fine.

I immediately called Bridgwater Animal Hospital and brought her in to be examined. They tested her eye pressure and it was at 70, higher than her other eye had been.

She has now been at the hospital for two nights and we are waiting to see what the Specialist from Saskatoon says regarding their recommendation.

Her eye is unresponsive, she is blind right now. The specialist said there is a chance she may need to have it removed, as there is no sense treating it if there’s no vision left.

Nova deserves to live a pain free life. She is so loved and I know she will have a happy life once she adjusts to whatever changes come her way. She is a tough puppy and I want to give her the best life possible.
