The very first ever senior animal is being admitted into Newman Nation... 9-year old Pepe!
Pepe was surrendered to Dallas Animal Services by his owner in bad shape with no reason why. I stumbled across his photo on a Dallas Dogs in Need page I like, and couldn't get him out of my head. I shared him on my personal Facebook page, where an awesome Central IL rescue said they could take him. I just had to get him from Texas to Illinois and pull under Newman Nation to transfer to them.
I worked on this sad little dog all day today. Somehow, I managed to secure him a spot on a rescue transport bus leaving Dallas on Saturday. I also found someone able to get him from the shelter and to the bus before it left. I had it all.
Until the shelter sent me the veterinary report that showed he was heartworm positive.
The rescue that was going to take him did not have a calm foster home available for him to recover in, and with 2 other heartworm positive dogs in their rescue, they did not have the funds for another. I lost his rescue, and I lost his ride because the transport cannot take heartworm positive dogs (liability reasons).
I had everything in place for this forgotten senior, and even though it fell apart, Newman Nation was not going to give up on him.
One of the friends that I met awhile back through Newman's Instagram page lives 25 minutes from the Dallas shelter. This incredible woman, who I've never met in person but share a strong senior animal love with, stepped up to get Pepe out of his cage and bring him home to foster.
I was not expecting to admit the first animal yet, but I couldn't ignore that my beloved Newman would be the one to truly save Pepe, because he was the connection to the foster home.
Pepe is 9 years old, just a little guy at 10 pounds. One eye is shrunk and the other has a cataract. He's got the usual older dog bad teeth. And tapeworm. And of course, heartworm. (Who knows what else further veterinary tests will reveal-eek!)
Pepe's freedom ride will either be 1/6 or 1/7.
