Hello All! In 2018, I was accepted into a Faculty Lead Study Abroad Program through Portland Community College; which means I have an incredible opportunity to study the internationally revered films of Pedro Almodovar in his home country, Spain. More specifically, we will split our time between Madrid and Barcelona.
As I work toward a degree/career in mental wellness and the arts, I want to have as thorough an understanding of different art mediums as possible. Art gives us a tangible road to the subconscious, where ample healing takes place. But art can also feel inaccessible to those who don't identify as artists.
Film is a very accessible, approachable form of art that has undeniable power to communicate, challenge, and unify. Almodovar's films are potent samples of film's utmost social potential. Studying his films in the context of their home country would give me unparalleled insight, not to mention inspiration, that I could then use to motivate, captivate, and understand future clients.
Career and educational goals aside, studying in Spain would also give me a chance to hone my Spanish speaking skills. While I am conversationally competent, I am not conversationally fluent. A little bit of immersion will do my eager-to-comprehend brain a world of good.
I cherish every step of my education, both in life and academia. In academia, I continue to hold a spot on the President's List for academic excellence, I pursue challenges, and I get deep satisfaction out of developing relationships with my peers and professors. In life, I do my best to foster a sense of humility and humor, find tenderness in myself and others, and think critically, creatively, and with empathy.
Since applying to the Summer 2019 trip to Spain, I have been working as much as possible in an effort to save money to meet my tuition needs. However, life continues to happen in the meantime and minor setbacks (such as a recent increase in rent and a brief bought of pneumonia) continue to subtract funds from my Spain savings.
I am selling what I can, working whenever possible, and coordinating events to ease the financial burden of this program. I have applied to every scholarship that was available to me, but the result(s) of these scholarships are not released until late spring/early summer.
As meticulously frugal and organized as I am, I will still not be able to cover tuition with my savings alone. Please consider donating so that I may study Almodovar's absolutely breathtaking work and bring back inspiration and wisdom to share. Every little thing helps!
