Help Milo Run Again

Donation protected
Milo is a purebred, year and a half old Australian Shepherd that was surrendered to a rescue after his owner developed MS. He went into rescue with a patella issue from, as our vet said, some kind of blunt force trauma, and was placed with a foster where he could rest and hopefully his patella issue would resolve.

Prior to coming into rescue, Milo had also developed some protective behaviors in protecting prone people - not so hard to figure out being that the only owner he had known for his short life had been ill. However, in his new foster home, Milo's tendency to protect someone lying down got him into trouble - he nipped one of his foster parents after jumping onto the couch with one that wasn't feeling well.

With a young Aussie on "crate rest" because of his patella, and having pain from his leg, and already having some issues with lack of training, this set the perfect storm and Milo was up for euthanasia with that rescue because of his behavior.

SOHO stepped in to give Milo a third chance, and an opportunity to fix his leg. He was placed with a behavior savvy foster home that has been working on his training, and per our vet, rested for two months with the hopes that his growth and rest would induce his patella to stay in place. Alas, this hope has been dashed and upon another vet consult, Milo needs surgery to fix his leg so he can run again.

Milo's behavior through all the poking and prodding and crate rest has been admirably good. He has taken to training with ease and learns extremely quickly what his handler wants of him. He even learns from the other dogs he lives with, and picks up good behaviors from them as well. He absolutely loves people, and thinks he is a lap dog - he loves to be curled up with you on the couch, and he is a smart, attentive pup that will make an excellent family member for an Aussie-savvy home.

The surgery itself is fairly intense, as Milo needs to have a groove cut into the bone so his tendon, and thus his patella, lay properly and his leg has better function. He may also have a small tear in the neighboring tendon, but the surgeon will not be sure until she takes a better look. Milo's surgery is scheduled for June 28, 2017.

Virginia Veterinary Surgical Associates at Dogwood, in Richmond, Virginia, has been generous enough to reduce the prospective amount of the surgery, and Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue has been kind enough to help us pick up half of the tab. However, we are still facing an $1100 bill, which is a LOT for a small rescue to bear.

His boy wants to stretch his legs so badly and run with the other dogs but he picks up his leg and hops along after a few strides. Can you spare a few bucks for this boy so we can get him running again?
