Help Me Make Better Records

Billy Pettinger  DECATUR, AL
This past year, I released 40 songs.

I have a bunch of new songs. As much as I would like to go into a professional studio and spend $10,000-$20,000 to record them, I don't think that is feasible right now.

Most of the songs I've recently released I recorded in my living room . I would like to continue to do this, but I would like them to be better.

I've always moonlighted as an "Engineer" (and by that I mean: wished I was a better one! haha) and I feel like I am a couple pieces of gear away from making recordings that I'm really proud of right here in my home.

It's also a more sustainable platform for me...I write a TON, and these ideas can either sit on a hard drive, or I can put them out into the world. You can either like them, or not. You can either preview them and buy/stream them, or not.

Some Gear I Really Need:

1 Shure SM7 Vocal Mic *BOUGHT!!!*
1 BOSS CE-2 Chorus Pedal *DONATED!!!*
1 set of Audio-Technica ATH-M50x *BOUGHT!!!*
1 set of Yamaha HS8 Speakers *BOUGHT!!!*
1 drumset *BORROWED!!!*
Universal Audio Apollo Twin Thunderbolt *BOUGHT!!!*
A used piano off of Craigslist *BOUGHT!!!*

Currently working towards/saving up for:

AKG 414 Guitar Mic $650 on eBay
C 703 Bass traps: $100 on Amazon
*Possibly* Sonarworks headphone and room calibration...a trusted friend said he couldn't live without this and to thank him later

Anything that is raised here because of you saintly human beings will chip away at this list. Anything above and beyond will go towards pressing copies of these new songs!

Thank you so much I love you!!!

BEST. BIRTHDAY. EVER!!!!

Not only have we reached the goal, donations are still coming in. Paper Bird Studios (aka my house) is now fully stocked with speakers, microphones, stands, cables, instruments, plugins, interfaces and bass traps. I have a smiling rainbow piggy bank especially for any more donations beyond the original goal and my tips over the few months. I think with the help of a few trusted friends all over the country, this may turn out to be a work of sound that I am really super proud of. With your help, the gear I was missing, and the time to track at my leisure without the hourly rate of a studio scaring my voice off, I think I need to press a record. Yes. It's time.

Thank you for the birthday wishes and birthday giftses!! Eeeep!!!

It's my birthday eve eve!!! I am so close to having everything I could ever want in my home studio...all thanks to you!!!! I'm watching a couple 414s on eBay right now and with your help, I can get some C703 bass traps to treat the studio walls with as well. I'm about to embark upon a very special birthday treat courtesy of a very special long time friend, as if I didn't already feel like the luckiest kid in the word. This campaign is only a couple hundred dollars and ONE item away from being 100% fulfilled. My literal every wish, come true. I'm so excited to get back and power up the robots. 35 is going to be my most productive year yet. And it's going to sound better than I could ever make it sound on my own, getting each piece of specialized gear one at a time over the course probably years.

Thank you!!!!! :D

Houston...We have speakers!

$570 away from stocking Paper Bird Studios (aka my room) with all the upgrades a kid could ask for.

Still working on that AKG414 Mic and last but not least, C703 Bass traps with which to treat the room. Been working lots but also writing tons, at least one new idea every couple days. Spent last night installing and updating ProTools...it's been so long since I demo-ed anything with it, I was like "This is subscription based now? Is this good?" haha. When I finally figured out my iLok account and Avid login, I started downloading all the updates and I am happy to say, we are almost ready to start rolling!!!

Thank you thank you thank you. In hindsight, I will likely giggle about the fact that I made something like 300 recordings (according to iTunes) with the same crumbly, falling apart headphones. Not one single speaker was used. Why was that never a priority??? Likely due to apartment based recording but nevertheless, it will be very novel moving forward how much I will appreciate being to hear recordings from a source not pointed directly into my eardrum :}

Eeeeeep!!! Eeeeep eeeep eeeep eeep eeeeep!!! Look what just got here!!! This is the only new piece of gear we will getting here at Paper Baird Studios. Why? Well because a used audio converter would be attached to the previous owner, and after the last eBay mishap, let's just say I'm trying to be a little more cautious. Most importantly though, this kind of technology really does improve quite quickly, and this will allow me to record with zero latency plus UA plugins of gear I know and love like LA2A and 1176 compressors. Also it just won technical excellence and creativity award at the national association of music merchants trade show due to its 24-bit/102kHz conversion rate and ability to upgrade (I can eventually add a bunch more channels if I wanted the ability to record more things at once like drums for example).
THANK YOU!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!! This took a big chunk out of the old
Budget...at least they threw in some candies

A humongous THANK YOU. Wanted to share some incredible stats with you:

Yesterday we had 1,114 to this campaign. That means people who are invested want to see how it's doing. That rules!

In total, there have been 6,628 visits. That is incredible!!! I had no idea I had so many friends out there.

In addition to the 85 donations made so far, there have been 380 FACEBOOK SHARES.

Anyone else finding that incredible? I'm not only surprised by the amount of generosity that you have exhibited thus far, I'm also blown away by how share-y you are. Just nice, nice people all around.

Thank you so much!!!
