Hope for Mahesh - Liver Transplant

Sept 28th, 2018

This 21-year-old young man in the picture is Mahesh, a classmate of my son, Rohit. A few days back the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University declared the first year MBBS results.  Unfortunately, Mahesh did not pass in all 3 subjects.  Being a medical educator, I realize the enormity of the syllabus to be covered, a vocabulary of over 10,000 new medical terminologies and the brevity of time allotted to prepare for these arduous exams.  For a young kid out of high school, this can be overwhelming.

Mahesh’s mom broke into a loud sob when I called her this morning choking in her own tears.  She was outside the ICU at Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, Chennai waiting for Mahesh who is on a ventilator since his liver has failed slipping into a hepatic coma.  A few months ago he was sitting behind my son’s desk in class at Tagore Medical College, Chennai with a satisfaction that he is right on track with a passion and mission to serve humanity and well on his way to becoming a doctor after qualifying the all India NEET exam.  I don’t know what went through this young man’s mind when he heard he didn’t pass first-year MBBS that he took the drastic decision of consuming poison.  And we hear he probably thought his lower-middle-class farming family could not afford another 7 Lakhs per year to redo his first-year exams !!!

I cannot even imagine the state of his mom who is at the brink of losing her son unless he gets a liver transplant in the next 24 hours!  It is unimaginable to raise 30 lakhs for a middle-class family in 24 hours while trying to wrap their heads around the fact that their lil’ boy is struggling for breath in the ICU. I don’t know whether young Mahesh was right or wrong but I know it was a young heart that wanted to serve fellow human beings.   Can we be human enough to give a helping hand to this hurting family and save this young doctor in the making?   There is still HOPE for Mahesh.  Each one of you can be that hope for him.
