Lorena never imagined this would happen to her. Who would? She’s the young mother of a four-year-old boy, a loving wife, a professional dancer and trainer — and she just lost her own mother to breast cancer only a year ago. So, when she found a painful lump in her breast while visiting her husband’s family in Europe, she assumed it was related to an injury from moving furniture. Even the doctor she saw in Europe told her it was only an abscess that would need to be drained once she returned to the US. Shortly after returning though she realized this was not the case. Her doctor found a second lump in her breast along with the first and after an MRI and three biopsies Lorena was diagnosed with Stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma with metastasis in the lymphatic nodes.
Despite this devastating prognosis, Lorena and her doctor believe she will heal her cancer. But she and her family need help. Lorena has a gruelling journey ahead of her. She must start 17 rounds of chemotherapy immediately and she will also need a single or double mastectomy once her chemotherapy is complete.
It’s no secret that, although these are life-saving treatments, the cost of treating cancer at this stage is astronomical. Lorena earns her living as a dancer and fitness teacher. Her husband is a fashion designer and freelance tailor. Together they also run a small business selling their line of children’s clothes. Prior to Lorena’s diagnosis she did not have health insurance. She has just been approved for Medi-Cal, which will cover the cost of her chemotherapy and drug treatments, but many of the procedures, doctor visits and other treatments will not be covered. Lorena and David live in Los Angeles and their respective families live in Mexico and Europe, so they will not be close enough to help out. Neither Lorena nor David have the option to take paid leave or paid vacation time from their work. Without these supports the cost of cancer treatments and help for Lorena and her family could bring them to the brink of financial disaster.
Lorena and David paid for her initial doctor’s visits, MRI and 3 biopsies with a credit card, totaling $3,120. Medi-Cal will not pay for her mastectomy, which will cost anywhere from $12,000 to $30,000 (if she wants to have reconstructive surgery). Their insurance also won’t cover the cost of putting in her central line (PICC) for her to receive her chemotherapy treatments from, which will cost another $1200. Her PET scan (up to $6,000), her next doctor visit, ($600) and many other future tests will not be covered either.
Lorena and her family will lose up to 50% of their income when Lorena has to take time off work for her chemotherapy, which will make it increasingly difficult for them to pay their rent, car payment and other living expenses. Lorena and David are really hoping they can keep Kayden at his current preschool so as not to disrupt his routine more than what is absolutely necessary. And with Lorena and David’s family being so far away, they will also need to find childcare to help look after Kayden while Lorena receives treatment and David must work.
Lorena Ortiz is one strong warrior mama and she is committed to healing her cancer, but she has much to bear through this journey.
