Help Lexie have a heart

$1,290 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 21 people in 25 days
Lexie is a 5 month old Golden Retriever who has been diagnosed with a significant subaortic stenosis (enlarged heart). She was recently surrendered by her owners due to the significant cost of surgery. She is currently in the loving home of her foster parents, Donald and Theresa in Simpsonville, SC.

Lexie was seen at Upstate Veterinary Specialists (UVS) in Greenville, SC for an echo cardiogram, and then she was referred to and seen atThe University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine for a cardiac consult. We are hoping she will be approved for balloon valvuloplasty to improve the flow of blood through the aortic valve. This surgery would need to be performed at University of GA School of Veterinary Medicine. We will hear their recommendations soon.

The cost of travel and surgery will fall on the hands of Foothills Golden Retriever Rescue and her foster parents and therefore, any help is greatly appreciated to give this sweet little girl a fighting chance. Her prognosis without surgery is only a few weeks to a few months. With surgery, her prognosis will depend on the level of success.

This GoFundMe page was set up by a family member of Lexie's foster parents to help with the extensive medical costs, without depleting FHGRR funds, and to be able to reach as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time. Time is of the essence for Lexie, as her heart condition is only getting worse.

Funds collected will only be used for the cost of Lexie's medical expenses. If any funds are not used for Lexie, they will be donated to Foothills Golden Retriever Rescue.

Thank you!

Lexie had her recheck appointment at U of GA Veterinary School of Medicine Wed. 7/11. They believe that Lexie is a candidate for the balloon procedure, but they are unable to perform it at UGA at this time. We've had a few good days with Lexie eating well and having normal puppy energy. Unfortunately today we are back to her not wanting/unable to eat and decreased energy again. I will update again when I have more information on Lexie's medical journey.

Just a quick update on Miss Lexie. She is doing so much better. She is now eating without vomiting and has gained 5 lbs. in the last week and a half. She is full of energy now and is acting more like a puppy should. She's been loosing her baby teeth, and I think her legs have almost doubled in length since we picked her up. We are less than a week away from her recheck appt. at University of GA. I will update after that appt. on the 11th. All prayers and donations for Lexie are greatly appreciated.

Just an update: Lexie has had some vomiting the last couple of days, which the Dr.'s think may be due to the medication (Carprofen) that she is taking to help with her bone disease. We have been feeding chicken and rice, and so far, this seems to be working. She also likes to sleep quite a bit, not very normal for a puppy, but because of her low blood pressure due to her heart defect. She likes cool places to sleep, like tile and the marble fireplace hearth.
Lexie is scheduled for her follow up appt. with the cardiologist at U of GA on July 11th. We will update again after her appt. Thank you for your continued prayers and donations.

We heard back from the Dr. today. The cardiologists are planning to go ahead with Lexie's surgery and are now deciding which cardiac balloon is the best choice for her surgery. (Who knew there were different types of cardiac balloons?) In the meantime, we are adjusting her medication in order to get her body ready for the surgery. A repeat echo cardiogram and a recheck of her cardiac pressures will be done after the July 4th holiday before a surgery date will be scheduled. Thank you so much to all who have already donated, and please keep the prayers and donations coming for this sweet fur baby.
