Help Kerry Beat Breast Cancer

My name is Melina McConnell. I am initiating this fundraiser for my very dear friend Kerry. To say that I was "shocked" when Kerry shared that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, is an understatement. I could hardly believe that my friend who doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, who is vegetarian/pescetarian, who meditates and exercises very regularly could have breast cancer, was unfathomable. That was one year ago this month...
For those of you who know Kerry, know how truly special she is. Kerry is one of the most positive people I know. She is very loving, soft spoken, kind, and generous. She is the mother of two wonderful children (Rachel and Jordan), who she absolutely adores.
She is also the kind of person who would have a difficult time asking for help…that’s where I come in…
Last April Kerry was diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer. This type of cancer grows and spreads faster than other breast cancers. It is more aggressive and requires additional treatments. Kerry completed 4 months of chemotherapy, May to September 2018. October 2018, she had a bilateral mastectomy. The surgery showed that she did not have a complete response to the chemotherapy. There was still some fairly significant residual cancer remaining. This meant 5 weeks of radiation early this year. Kerry was to continue an intravenous targeted therapy, Trastuzumab, due to the triple positive markers, until July 2019. In late February, she was approved to switch from trastuzumab to trastuzumab emtansine. The new drug increases her disease free survival rates and risk of recurrence. It does however have a chemo component to it so causes more side effects. It has been a long journey for her that continues to be physically and emotionally challenging.
Although Kerry does not want to have to reach out to family and friends for financial support, this extended time away from work, due to the additional treatments required for her diagnosis, make things difficult. She needs all of us to support her, in any way we can. Whatever you can give, means the world to her and she is eternally grateful for any and all support.
