Around Memorial Day, my cousin Kelly Kile noticed a lump on her left breast. Being only 26 years old she did not think much of it, but after waiting a few days decided she needed to at least make an appointment with the OBGYN to have it looked at. The doctor examined her and sent Kelly to another facility to have an ultrasound done. The ultrasound revealed that there was a mass in her left breast - however, due to her age and no family history of breast cancer, the doctor brushed off the lump as nothing more than a fibrocyst. Thankfully Kelly did not feel the same way. She trusted her gut and pushed her doctors to do further testing. She was sent for an MRI, mammogram, and ultimately a biopsy to rule out cancer.
Then, the phone call came. Kelly was diagnosed with invasive ductal breast cancer at 26 years old. Less than 5% of breast cancer diagnoses are under the age of 40, and she is in that unlucky percentile.
Kelly's type of tumor thrives on hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone. Because of this, Kelly will have to undergo hormone therapy for 5-10 years. This lengthy and grueling process will shut down her ovaries, forcing her body to enter into premature menopause. There is a chance her body will not come out of this. For she and Matt to have any chance of starting a family, Kelly will need to freeze her embryos and go through IVF in hopes of getting pregnant. In addition to the therapies, Kelly and her medical team have decided that a double mastectomy will give her the best chance of beating this cancer. Next Friday, July 21st, Kelly will have a double mastectomy to remove her breasts and the tumor, and her surrounding lymph nodes will be biopsied. After a recovery period, Kelly will then have to undergo reconstructive surgery.
More than anything we ask for your prayers for Kelly's strength and health. However, even with insurance, they are going to have expensive medical bills. In addition, Kelly and Matt's dream of having a family will be put on hold and will solely depend on IVF, which is not covered under insurance.
