Katie's Last Wishes

Hi, my name is Katie Hickson, some of you may know me from the TV series I created and hosted called "Horse Talk TV". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGu-iNbfz9g
Whilst Horse Talk TV has been my passion for the last 5 years , the last 10 months my life has changed dramatically after I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer.

Like many women, I knew nothing about this disease commonly referred to as the "Silent Killer". While Ovarian cancer is one of the less common cancers in women it is one of the biggest killers, with over 70% of women with this disease not making it through to 5 years after diagnosis.

It is called the “Silent Killer” because in its early stages, stage 1 and stage 2, when is 81% curable, it is completely without any physical symptoms. This means that when women like myself present to their doctor with symptoms, the cancer has always advanced to stage 3 or as in my case stage 4, the most advanced.

In March this year I went to my doctor with vague symptoms of chronic fatigue, bloating and lower back pain and had some lumps in my tummy. I thought that it was probably a bowel issue but my doctor looked at my CT scan and I was told I had malignant Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. Devastating!

Up until this diagnosis I was still working on ideas for developing another TV series and I was continuing my work as a horse trainer as well. But now my life has been turned completely upside down both emotionally and financially. I also worked as a part time disability support worker which I have had to give up.

Unfortunately there have been further complications with the cancer that has subsequently resulted in a bowel blockage that has been treated through colostomy surgery which has further restricted my mobility.

I am currently now on a disability pension which covers my basic bills and living expenses but no more. I need your support to help me fight my battle with my cancer and to raise awareness of this devastating disease.

Only 11% of women with Stage 4 ovarian cancer make it through to the 5 year survival mark after treatment with chemo and surgery. I would like to be one of those who make it.

In addition to undergoing chemo I am supporting my immune system with herbal, diet and alternative therapies. However the cost of the alternative therapies plus the need for additional specialist consultations is not cheap and most are not covered by the public health system or eligible for rebates from my health insurance.

My target is to raise $60,000 and this is to help me to get the best of both alternative and orthodox medicine treatments in Australia. However there are specialist cancer treatments such as IPT (insulin potentiated therapy) only available overseas so the funds raised with also help me undertake treatment in the USA.

Your help and assistance could make all the difference between my surviving this cancer or becoming one of the many women who didn’t make it. I thank you for your contribution and for caring
