John was on his way to the hospital to visit his brother when he got into a terrible car accident on 4/23/2019. Although tragic, he was very lucky, he should not be here today but through some miracle nobody was terribly hurt. His vehicle, however, is another story. His van was completely destroyed in the accident and for most people this would be upsetting but for John this is devastating.
John has been a paraplegic since 1990 due to a separate vehicle accident where he was hit head on by a tractor trailer. He required extensive heart surgery to repair an aorta that burst and as a result of the surgery lost the use of his legs, mere months before his wife Sandy gave birth to their twin boys and with two other children already at home. Despite all of this John remained positive and retained his independence and did not allow the accident to effect his mobility or his quality of life for himself or his family. Due to his condition John requires a special vehicle so that he is able to get in and out and drive on his own while allowing space for his power wheelchair and appropriate room to maneuver. He has ongoing health issues stemming from this accident that require weekly trips to various health care facilities and having a vehicle he can utilize is vital to his health and independence.
Mere weeks before the accident on 4/23 John had purchased a vehicle he could use and had it appropriately equipped after saving up for quite some time. John was the happiest man in the world and was travelling around on his own after having to take the medical bus which was over a mile away to the nearest bus stop. All that came to an abrupt end when he lost use of his brakes and got into this accident.
I am asking for any help you can give to help him save up for another vehicle. This man is my father and my hero. I stand behind his determination to remain independent and self sufficient and am asking you to do the same. Any small amount you can give will be greatly appreciated more than you could ever know. John deserves the same freedom most of us take for granted each day and your support is needed to help achieve this goal.
