Support for John Copeland

John Copeland is an adventurous soul, brings laughter to everyone, and is known for his sincere (sometimes hilariously brutal) honesty. He loves riding his motorcycles through the canyons and also off roading in the desert. He tells the best stories of his adventures, especially of his wedding day this past summer, and loves to show pictures of his awesome pups, Frank and Priscilla.

As most of you may know, John is the “Door Guy” at Onyx Nightclub in downtown San Diego. He has loved his job there for the past 9 years even though he knows it can be a dangerous position dealing with sometimes over intoxicated or angry patrons.

On Saturday, November 17, 2018, John was at work doing his normal routine checking IDs. Out of no where, John was struck from behind. He was blindsided and the punch knocked him out. John's limp body came crashing to the ground where he landed face first on the cement.

Police and paramedics were on site within minutes. He was taken to UCSD hospital by ambulance and there it was discovered that his jaw was broken in 3 places and many of his front teeth had been knocked out. The next day he had a four-hour surgery where they repaired his jaw with titanium plates.

His recovery will be challenging as his jaw will be wired shut for 6-8 weeks. He will also need extensive dental work and orthodontia after his jaw heals. Since his break was so severe, speech therapy will most likely be necessary after healing. Unfortunately, he may be drinking his Thanksgivings dinner through a straw if he’s lucky enough to be released by the holiday.

The man who struck him was chased down and caught by another Onyx employee. He was arrested and charged with felony assault. The man who hit John had no interaction with John whatsoever, it was as if he wanted to hit someone and John happened to be the unlucky target. We will make sure he is prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

As for John's employment at Onyx, it’s unsure if he is willing or able to resume the position that he once loved. He will also be out of work from his full-time employment in the Aquarium industry which, due to the breathing scuba equipment used, he may not be able to return to for quite some time.

We ask for donations of any size to help recuperate his lost wages and other expenses so John can recover as stress free as possible from his time off work.
