Help Jennifer Yane Fight Cancer

Donation protected
If you’ve met my mother, Jennifer Yane, you probably haven’t forgotten her.

She has given you a hug, a hand, a meal, a button, or a sugar-free, gluten-free cookie. She’s an artist, an entrepreneur, an activist, a dedicated cat and dog enthusiast, a teacher, a sponsor, a mentor, and an addict with 40 years in recovery who has helped countless other addicts, alcoholics and recovering people around the world with her inspirational buttons, calligraphy quotes, and original art. My mother once won the “Survivor of the Year” award from the Chamber of Commerce and has been running her own business, JenniferUnlimited.com   since 1984.

At 72, she is still sponsoring, mentoring and marching, making art, buttons and all kinds of interesting awe-inspiring recipes. She is a passionately dedicated Grandma, wife, sister, aunt, friend, cat-mom, and human mother who has given me more support, encouragement, love, wisdom, and nurturing than I can truly begin to describe. Without her I would certainly not be the writer, teacher, mother, wife, or woman I am today.

Unfortunately, after 9 years of thinking she was cancer-free, she was recently diagnosed with a recurrence of Granulosa Cell Tumor (GCT), a  very rare form of ovarian cancer (less than 5% of all ovarian cancers)  that is usually slow growing, but has a high recurrence rate because it leaves seeds behind. She has worked very hard through diet and exercise to circumvent this recurrence, but it is a persistent disease.

This surgery (her third for GCT) is complicated because the tumor is located between her bladder and colon, abutting both. There are also other possible sites that may become more apparent during surgery.  Miraculously, my mother found online a GCT researcher and patient advocate for this exceedingly rare disease, who has been a great help and support since her cancer resurfaced, and he directed her to a gyn/onc pelvic reconstruction specialist at UNC Chapel Hill where she is now scheduled for surgery on December 13. The actual number of tumors won’t be determined until the surgery itself, but whatever the outcome, there is sure to be a long recovery period ahead.

I am creating this fundraiser to help offset the costs of travel, care and healing for my mother and her amazing and loving husband and partner of 26 years, who will be taking  time off work to be with her in NC and to care for her on their return. I’d love to be able to help set their minds at ease about financial matters so they can dedicate their thoughts, energy and attention towards healing. When I told my mother I was creating this Go Fund Me she said she’d like to donate a portion to STOP GCT  and to support the work of David Silon who has dedicated hours to helping her without asking for a cent.

Thank you so much for helping give back to Jennifer Yane a portion of what she has given to us.

With much gratitude and love,

Valley

PS: Please feel free to Facebook message my mother or email her messages of love and support at j[email redacted].  However, we ask that there be no expectation for returned messages or phone calls during this time of preparation and healing.
