Help Hisham Beat Colon Cancer

Donation protected
Our friend and colleague Hisham Ahmed has overcome many challenges in his extraordinary life but none more frightening than the present one of colon cancer. To win this battle, he needs our help.

Hisham was born blind in a Palestinian refugee camp near Bethlehem in the West Bank fifty-six years ago.  Conditions were so harsh that six of his siblings died in early childhood. But Hisham’s innate optimism and great intelligence, coupled with the love and support of his courageous parents, made him determined to get a good education - to become someone who could make a difference in life.

Against all odds and adversities, in spite of blindness and daily struggles, Hisham became an international scholar, earned a Ph.D. in political science from UC Santa Barbara, and was a Fulbright Scholar. In addition to teaching, he has written many articles and books. He is an eloquent insightful voice advocating for genuine justice and peace in the Middle East. Saving Hisham’s life could mean saving the lives of so many other people as well.

Because of the severity of the cancer, Hisham is on leave from his professorship at St. Mary’s College of Moraga, California, and his wife, Amneh, has also had to stop teaching to take care of him. Oncologists in his health plan told him that the only remedy his insurance would pay for was the removal of his entire colon, creating unacceptable risks and daunting life-long consequences, especially for a blind person. That is why he has gone with his family to a cancer clinic in Germany that provides immunotherapy as well as some procedures not yet commonly used in the U.S. As you guessed, none of this is covered by insurance. He and his wife are spending all their savings to pay for this.

Ten days ago Hisham had to have an emergency operation. This has depleted him financially and set him back physically and emotionally. Through these difficulties, Hisham manages to maintain a gentleness and calmness and hope that he will overcome the cancer and return to his students and other vital work. Please help so he can stay longer at the clinic and then get follow-up treatments and care once he returns home. Hisham and Amneh have no source of money other than us for at least the next few months.

We are requesting funds immediately to help with all aspects of Hisham’s treatments and to help support his two young children and wife. With our aid he has a chance to beat cancer, just as he has overcome all the other stumbling blocks in his life. Each contribution, no matter how small, will be a transfusion of energy, love, hope, and light. We are so grateful for whatever you will offer to help at this crucial time. Thank you, and may your generosity be a shield against you and your loved ones ever having to face cancer.
