Help Heather Bridgens fight Cancer

***Thank you for visiting We have started a CaringBridge Blog   to help keep people updated on Heather and how to help. ***

In mid-April, Heather received the devastating news that she has brain and spine cancer. Heather courageously battled breast cancer in 2016 and this new diagnosis is a reoccurrence of the breast cancer in her central nervous system.

Heather is a bright ray of sunshine to all those around her.  She is a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, educator, swim and water polo coach, and friend.  We, her friends and family want to make this difficult time just a little easier by lessening their financial burden.

She was originally told there was nothing they could do, but upon further consultation with her doctors, they have found immunotherapy, radiation, and other treatment options may help prolong her life. While her diagnosis is considered terminal, she is following the treatment plan and also consulting with doctors from around the country in hopes to give her as much time as possible. Time she can spend with her husband, children, and family. How do you put a price on time? Heather just turned 47 last month. She and her husband, Garrett have four children ages 7, 11, 12, and 22. There is nothing fair about this situation.

While Heather has insurance, her insurance company will not cover much of the expensive treatment she needs because the insurance company deemed the treatment as experimental.  She has left her job as Principal of Bohemia Elementary School and her husband is on indefinite leave from his job as well.  As you can imagine it is impossible for them to work right now and for the foreseeable future. It is our hope that we can help ease the financial stress so they can focus on what is most important, family.

As a Cottage Grove High School English teacher and elementary school principal, she has been a part of the lives of many students and families in our community.  As a lifelong resident of Cottage Grove, she has been active in supporting youth and her local community. She has been a giver her whole life. We want to show her how much she is loved and help her to have as much time as possible.

Heather, Garrett, and the family have always been the ones helping others in our community and it feels uncomfortable to be asking for help. The family is humbled and grateful for the outpouring of support they have received.  If there is more money raised than needed for treatment costs, money will create a local scholarship in Heather’s name or to community groups who have already generously donated to the family.
