Help Heal Coach Steven

Blocksport is a family. We say it often. But we really mean it. Like any family, there are times when we must all come together to lift another up. That time is now.

For many years Coach Steven Murphy lent his volleyball IQ, passion for coaching and good heart to Blocksport. Recently though he’s taken a step back from coaching in order to focus on his health. We sat down with Steven for a brief chat to learn about his current health as well his passion for volleyball. Please read and learn how you can help.

Blocksport: Hi Steven. So good to talk to you. We certainly miss you.

Steven: I miss you all too. So much. 

Blocksport: So you been in and out of the hospital for the last 2 years. It has to be a lot to deal with emotionally and financially. Can you give us a bit of insight into how you are feeling?

Steven: I’m going through the hardest experience of my life being sick. My body became host to an infection that has caused my body to swell with fluid. At this point I am being checked for a possible cancer. This is my second time going through chemo. I have been on my current round for about 4 months. Right now I am learning how to live again. From the basics of walking, eating and even using the restroom . Being coherent and understanding to push day to day is draining. But everyday I get a little more stronger, gain confidence and continue to proceed.
Blocksport: So what’s next? What are your hopes and goals for when you are able to leave the hospital? 

Steven: I plan on coming back and being apart of the Blocksport family. Just being affiliated in any capacity is my goal. 

Blocksport: What do you miss most about the sport?

Steven: I miss the competition  and camaraderie of the game. Volleyball is a true team sport. All six players have to be in tune. I miss feeling my best, doing being my best and being able to do anything to help my teammates be successful.
Blocksport: We love you Steven. We want nothing but the best for you. And we definitely need you back in action on the court and behind the scenes. 

Steven: That means so much. You know I love you all too. More than you know.

Blocksport: How can we, the Blocksport community, help you?

Steven: Just knowing people care and are rooting for me makes me feel good. It gives me a sense of pride to not give up. It gives me something to live for. Any support is encouraging.

Blocksport: One last question for you. What advice do you have for any of our girls who may be going through a hard time? Any words of wisdom?

Steven: Learn your strengths and weaknesses. Trust yourself. Adversity is part of the game of life. Don’t quit. Every ball touch counts for something. Positive momentum is everything. Keep going forward.
