Help Fund My Expedition to the Indian Himalayas

Donation protected
My name is Joe Leonard. I’m a 17-year old from London, living in New York City. This summer, I’ll be taking part in a five-week expedition in the Ladakh region of the Indian Himalayas with the British Exploring Society. I’ll be a member of a 12-person team, trekking at high altitudes, traversing glaciers and collecting scientific data for climate change research.

The British Exploring Society is a well known youth development charity that allows young people to take part in challenging expeditions to remote parts of the world. Its mission is to encourage personal growth in young explorers, summarised perfectly by its motto ‘Adventure with Purpose’. My expedition will involve challenges such as trekking to a glacier to measure how much it has shrunk due to climate change, or taking weather readings at high altitudes for the local meteorological office.

Last summer, I took part in the Outward Bound Ultimate Expedition in Snowdonia. The course involved three weeks hiking across Snowdonia National Park in Wales, all 23 nights spent under canvas. Despite the many blisters, soaked clothes and repetitive rice puddings, it was probably the best experience of my life. I felt a massive sense of achievement arriving back at the centre with my team, and the impression Snowdonia left on me has played a key role in encouraging me for this expedition.

I have a huge interest in outdoor activities, but living in a big city makes this difficult to pursue. I believe this expedition will give me a five-week long opportunity to do something I would otherwise never have the chance to do. As this will be my final summer before I finish at school, it will also give me an opportunity to mature (which mum says is very necessary) and learn new skills, alongside a team drawn from many walks of life and with a wide age-range, from 16 to 25.

My biggest challenge right now, however, is to raise the money for this expedition. British Exploring Society believes that its participants should follow in the footsteps of famous explorers such as Shackleton and Cook, and raise the necessary funds themselves to finance all aspects of the trip. It realises that this is a major part of the journey as it helps the explorer feel more responsible for the adventure ahead.

I will therefore be arranging fundraising activities over the next few months that you can follow on my Facebook account or my GoFundMe page. I need to raise £3,600 for the trip, as well £2,200 for flights and equipment. I would hugely appreciate any amount you could donate towards my expedition; your donation, no matter the size, will not only support my personal development but will advance scientific research and help battle climate change. I plan to document much of the expedition in photos and will post the story on my return.

I know this expedition will be an experience like no other and I can almost hear the tent canvas flapping in the night wind and imagine the immense sense of victory when we summit at 6,000 meters. I can’t thank you enough for helping me begin my journey.
