Help for Thinking Paye

After the 14-year civil war in Liberia, the education system was destroyed. The literacy rate dropped below 32%. School enrollment declined from over 72% to 32% for girls, and from 73% to 48% for boys. Parents were forced to send children out to become breadwinners for their families.

For several years, Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa has been shipping supplies to Liberia. This year, we had an opportunity to bring a child to Iowa for medical care.

Thinking Paye arrived in the US in October, 2017 from Liberia. She was born without the use of her lower legs, and at age 15, has spent her life walking on her knees. She is staying with our church members, Harrison and Garmai Kpartipa and their family.

Thankfully, her evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation is being provided at no cost by Shriner's Hospital, and she has already made two trips to Shriner's Hospital in Minneapolis. Over the next year, they plan to perform three surgeries: on her hips, her knees, and her feet.  During their evaluation, Shriner's found that she has hook worms, which will need to be eradicated before they can perform the first surgery.

Funds raised will defray the cost of travel to and from Shriners, winter clothes and living expenses for Thinking, and medication needed to get her healthy for surgery.
